GAME RECAP

Wesley Person scored 22 points and drained a crucial three-pointer with 62 seconds left as the Cleveland Cavaliers overcame a horrific fourth quarter to post their eighth straight win and hand the Los Angeles Lakers their first home loss, 94-84.

Cleveland, which matched its longest winning streak since January 31st-February 19th, 1996, led by 19 points heading into the fourth quarter but made just 5-of-18 from the field over the final 12 minutes.

A free throw by Elden Campbell pulled Los Angeles within 85-80 with 1:44 to play but Kobe Bryant, who scored 14 of his 21 points in the fourth, missed a fast-break layup. Person made the Lakers pay when he took a pass from rookie Brevin Knight and hit a three-pointer on the left wing with 1:02 to go.

"When you hit a shot to ice the game, those are the best feelings," Person said. "When a team is making a run at you and you get a shot wide open and hit it, you know the game is over at that point. It's just a great feeling."

Los Angeles got no closer than six points thereafter and fell to 8-1 at home, dropping into a tie with the Atlanta Hawks for the best record in the league at 15-3. The 84 points was a season low for the Lakers, who made just 4-of-16 from the floor in the third period.

"We dug ourseles in a hole and never should have put ourselves in that position to begin with," Bryant said. "We have to play harder than that, especially on your home floor. It's very disappointing. We had no energy, our competitiveness wasn't there."

Person scored 10 points in a pivotal 24-7 third-quarter run as the Cavs won their sixth in a row away from home, notching their best road winning streak since taking seven straight during the 1994-95 season.

"He's (Person) made many big baskets at critical times for us with other teams leading or when we've been up by a few baskets," Cavs coach Mike Fratello said. "You just can't say enough about how he's playing right now."

Cedric Henderson scored 14 points for Cleveland, which has won three straight games at the Forum and 10 of the last 13 meetings overall against the Lakers.

Person capped the huge 24-7 burst with a layup on the break, giving the Cavs a 72-49 cushion with 1:51 left in the third.

"Anytime you come into anyone's building with the best record in the league and you beat them, sure it's a great win," Person said. "We were working hard on our streak and wanted to keep it going."

Los Angeles trailed 76-57 after three quarters, but Bryant scored the first six Laker points of the final period and then drilled a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 79-68. Bryant again connected from behind the arc to pull his team within 81-73 with 6:14 remaining, capping a 16-5 run.

Shawn Kemp, who hit just 4-of-14 shots, fouled out with 11 points and 13 rebounds as the Cavs were clinging to an 81-75 lead with 3:48 to go. Danny Ferry kept Cleveland comfortably in front with a key jumper just 13 seconds later, but Campbell answered with a short hook shot.

Eddie Jones sank two free throws with 2:18 left to trim the deficit to 83-79 with 2:18 to go. But again, Ferry came back with a big jumper to push the lead back to six.

Ferry, who had nine points, also sank four free throws in the final minute to help seal the win for Cleveland, which owned a 49-37 rebounding advantage. Before fouling out with 1:44 to play, Zydrunas Ilgauskas registered 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Campbell scored 13 points while Jones and Derek Fisher chipped in 11 apiece for the Lakers, who shot 36 percent (26-of-72) from the floor and made just 3-of-18 three-pointers.

"You have to give respect to those guys for beating us, they played a great defensive game," Jones said. "They made us shoot shots we didn't want and they made us try to win on 15-foot pull-ups."

"Everybody's gunning for the Lake show," Bryant added. "Only way we can lose is if we beat ourselves and that's coming out and playing with no energy."
