GAME RECAP

P.J. Brown scored eight of his 20 points and Eric Murdock added eight of his 10 in the decisive fourth-quarter run as the Miami Heat defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 97-81, in a matchup of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

Miami took the lead for good late in the first quarter but the Hawks cut the deficit to 71-66 heading into the final period. After Atlanta rookie Ed Gray hit a free throw, the Heat reeled off an 18-5 run to put the game out of reach. Brown's dunk with 4:59 to play capped the burst, giving Miami an 89-72 cushion.

"We played our best road game of the year," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "In the fourth quarter, we just pushed it. We came in against the NBA's best team, so our guys feel real good about it. Tonight we made a real conscious effort to move the ball."

Voshon Lenard added 22 points and Jamal Mashburn chipped in 13 as six players scored in double figures for Miami, which won its fourth straight game and seventh in the last eight overall. The Heat (14-5) boosted their lead in the Atlantic Division to one game over the idle Orlando Magic.

"I think they got kind of tired towards the fourth quarter," Lenard said. "We just wanted to beat the best team in the league."

Christian Laettner had 22 points and eight rebounds and Steve Smith added 17 and eight as Atlanta (15-4) suffered its second straight defeat and fell into a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the league's best record. The Hawks also lost for just the second time in 11 home games.

Miami's Tim Hardaway shot just 4-of-14 from the field but came up two rebounds shy of a triple-double with 10 points and 10 assists.

"We played defense aggressively, we rebounded very well," said Hardaway. "We got out on the open court and made things happen."

The Heat connected on 52 percent (40-of-77) from the floor, including a 10-of-15 performance by Brown. Atlanta shot 41 percent (29-of-71) and made just 20-of-31 of its free throws.

"We just missed shots," Smith said. "They had a good run today, we did not play well."

"I did not like the way we executed," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens added. "I felt our transition from offense to defense was not real good. We missed assignments. I thought we had a mental letdown, because we were not making free throws."

Murdock led the effort from Miami's bench, which outscored Atlanta's reserves, 21-10.

Isaac Austin, who fouled out in 21 minutes, scored all 11 of his points in the first half, helping Miami to a 47-37 lead. The Heat shot 47 percent in the first half (18-of-38) while the Hawks made just 33 percent (13-of-39).

"We wanted to win bad tonight," Lenard added. "I especially wanted it bad. We came out very agressive from the start."

Laettner's layup pulled the Hawks within 67-64 with 1:50 left in the third quarter, but Atlanta was unable to grab the lead.
