GAME RECAP

The reeling Toronto Raptors lost their 17th consecutive game, falling 95-82 to the Charlotte Hornets, who got 20 points and five steals from Bobby Phills and 19 from Glen Rice.

The Raptors have lost 19 of 20 games this season and tied the 1988-89 Miami Heat for the ninth-longest single-season losing streak in NBA history. They are approaching the all-time mark of 23, set by the Vancouver Grizzlies during the 1995-96 season.

"We had wide open shots and we missed them," Toronto coach Darrell Walker said. "Rebounding wasn't the problem. We were in the game. One of these times we're going to get over the hump."

Phills scored 11 points in the fourth quarter. Anthony Mason chipped in 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists and Vlade Divac grabbed 14 boards for the Hornets, who snapped a three-game road losing streak.

Damon Stoudamire scored 20 points, John Wallace added 15 and Oliver Miller grabbed 12 rebounds for the Raptors, who have lost nine straight home games.

"We contained him (Damon Stoudamire) down the stretch, which was definitely in our favor. We finally figured them out in the fourth," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "We started to make quick passes and found the open man. We had trouble up to that point matching their movement and energy. They don't play like a team that's lost 17 in a row."

"We were right in that basketball game," Walker said. "Damon got a little frustrated and wanted to win the game on his own. If somebody's wide open, you've got to pass the basketball."

Charlotte held a slim 68-67 lead entering the final quarter, but a pair of free throws by teenage rookie Tracy McGrady pushed Toronto into a 69-68 lead with 10:59 remaining.

Following Matt Geiger's jumper and a free throw by Phills, Marcus Camby sank two free throws to tie the score, 71-71, with 8:21 left.

But the Hornets went on a 10-1 run. J.R. Reid started the rally with a jumper and Phills, who contributed eight points to the spurt, finished it off with a drive to make it 81-72 with 4:38 to play.

"We were getting jumps on the ball and scoring points in the fourth quarter. Up until then they were knocking down their shots. We've been struggling so the game could've gone the other way," said Phills. "Luckily for us we stepped up. It was a big win for us because we need to beat teams like this. Otherwise, there would have been a lot of finger-pointing."

Toronto only shot 18 percent (3-for-17) from the field in the fourth quarter and committed nine turnovers, leading to nine Charlotte points. The Raptors' first field goal in with final period was by Walt Williams with 7:44 to go.

"We turned the ball over at the end of the game," Stoudamire said. "We played well for three quarters. We could've won this game easily. We've got to score buckets. We just couldn't hit the shots."

Toronto guard Doug Christie missed the game with a sprained left ankle.
