GAME RECAP

Tracy Murray buried a career-high seven three-pointers en route to a season-high 26 points and Rod Strickland added 23 points and 14 assists as the Washington Wizards remained perfect at the MCI Center with a 120-99 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Washington, which tied its season-best scoring total, improved to 4-0 in the brand new MCI Center after losing all five games at the USAirways Arena. The Wizards scored in triple digits for the third straight game and beat an Atlantic Division foe for the first time in seven tries.

"It's the players, they're shooting the ball," said Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff about the success at the MCI Center. "The place is more intimate, but the players are playing well. They're healthy and there is continuity there. We took advantage of the mismatches and the guys were very unselfish. If you take your time and take an extra second, things usually work out for you."

Rookie Keith Van Horn, playing in his third game, scored a personal-best 23 points and Kerry Kittles had 17 for New Jersey. The Nets allowed a season-high in points and lost for the fourth time in their last five games.

"Over 82 games, you're not going to have 82 great games," said Nets coach John Calipari. "Did they do this to us, or did we do this to ourselves? I don't know."

Juwan Howard scored eight of his 18 points in the first quarter, while Van Horn had 11 as the teams were even at 24-24 after 12 minutes of play.

"He's (Van Horn) still learning," added Calipari. "He hasn't played a pressing team before, so he made some mistakes. But he showed some people here that he is darn good."

The Nets took a 31-29 lead 2:06 into the second period on David Benoit's three-pointer before Washington took command of the game with a 20-4 run. Ledell Eackles and Strickland each netted four points in the spurt and Murray hit a pair of three-pointers to put the Wizards ahead, 49-35, with 2:54 to go in the half.

"When they double Juwan, or Rod (Strickland) goes into the lane, I'm just out there picking them up," said Murray. "I know if I keep shooting, most of them are going to fall. If there is a trapping defense, somebody has to get open. That's my job, I have to make them pay."

New Jersey narrowed the gap to 53-45 at the intermission, but Washington scored the first four points of the third quarter to push the margin back to double figures.

The Wizards also tallied the final four points of the period to assume an 81-63 advantage, and continued with seven straight points to open the fourth. Murray and Strickland combined for nine points in the 11-0 run that gave Washington its biggest lead at 88-63 with 10:54 to play.

The Nets, who never got closer than 17 points thereafter, have lost three straight games on the road. Sixth man Chris Gatling did not play due to a bruised right calf.

Calbert Cheaney scored 15 points and Chris Webber had 14, 15 rebounds and a season-high eight assists for the Wizards, who shot 58 percent from the floor (44-of-76), including 8-of-12 three-pointers. The team played without its two starting forwards for most of the fourth quarter, as Howard was ejected for arguing with an official and Webber fouled out.

Jayson Williams totaled 14 points and 12 boards and Sherman Douglas scored 14 points for New Jersey, which was outrebounded, 43-34. Starting point guard Sam Cassell was held scoreless in the first half and finished with eight points and nine assists.
