GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 29 points and made a big defensive play to help the Charlotte Hornets continue their recent mastery of the feuding Washington Wizards with a 104-101 victory.

With the Hornets holding a 102-101 lead, Wizards point guard Rod Strickland drove the middle of the lane, where Anthony Mason was in defensive position. Rice tipped the ball away from behind, outraced everyone for possession and dunked for the final margin with eight seconds remaining.

"Basically the last play of the game was a high pick and roll so I decided to drive the line," Strickland said. "Glenn came from behind and had a chance to block my shot."

"I realized that there was a pick and roll in the middle of the floor and I had to take away the lane," said Rice, who notched his 12th 20-plus point game. "It was a very interesting fourth quarter. It was a big win for us tonight. We realize that Washington is a good team. We wanted to come out aggrressive. We're starting to come around beacuse we're keeping the defense solid."

The Wizards had a chance to tie it, but a three-pointer by Chris Webber from the right wing was off the mark.

Mason had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Vlade Divac added 15 points for the Hornets, who have won 11 of the last 14 meetings with the Wizards.

"Today was definitely a good win," Mason said. "Last night was a great win because Toronto is a team that makes you work every aspect of the game. But Washington was a good win because every game is important. We have to take the good and the bad. The good was that we were able to win the game. The bad was that we almost let them come back to win it. I'm not concerned about my own stats, just as long as the team wins. But I think we have a better chance when I put up numbers for the team."

Ledell Eackles scored 24 points in 24 minutes off the bench and Juwan Howard added 23 and seven rebounds for the Wizards, who had their four-game winning streak stopped. Strickland, who apparently had a scuffle with teammate Tracy Murray before the game, had 10 points and eight assists.

"The team pulled away from us in the first half, but we rallied in the second half to give ourselves a chance to win the ballgame," said Eackles, who made 8-of-11 shots from the field. "I ended up shooting well in the second half. Fortunately, we played defense and were able to have a chance to win with the play Bernie (Bickerstaff) called."

The Wizards would not confirm reports that the teammates had fought this afternoon at a Charlotte hotel, but both players had cuts and scratches on their face and arms.

Strickland made a pair of free throws to cap a 30-11 run and give Washington a 101-99 lead with 1:12 to go. Divac made one free throw with one minute remaining and the Wizards had a chance to extend their lead, but Strickland missed a short jumper on the ensuing possession. Divac grabbed the rebound and hit two free throws for a 102-101 lead with 24 seconds left.

Rice had six points and J.R. Reid added five of his nine in the first period as the Hornets held a 31-30 edge. Terry Davis, who had six points and 12 rebounds, had a tip-in to give the Wizards took their biggest lead, 43-40, with 5:23 left in the second.

The Hornets responded with a 14-0 burst capped by Mason's layup for a 54-43 advantage with 54 seconds left. Webber made a three-pointer with 43 seconds left and a dunk 20 seconds later to pull the Wizards within 54-48 at the break.

Webber opened the third with a hook shot to cut Charlotte's lead to four but the Hornets scored six straight points, capped by Rice's layup for a 60-50 advantage with 10:26 left in the third.
