GAME RECAP

Dell Curry sank a jumper with six seconds remaining and the Charlotte Hornets held off the Chicago Bulls in a furious finish for a 79-77 victory, their third consecutive win.

On Chicago's last possession, Toni Kukoc shot a three-pointer for the win, but his shot bounced off the back of the rim. He momentarily grabbed the carom, but then lost possession as the buzzer sounded.

Glen Rice had 21 points and seven rebounds, Vlade Divac 10 points and Anthony Mason seven boards, six assists and three steals for the Hornets, who snapped a four-game losing streak against the Bulls. Charlotte last defeated Chicago on April 8th, 1996.

"We had 14 steals, eight blocks and 32 assists against a championship team tonight. We also held them to below 40 percent (39 percent) shooting," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "Our offense was sputtering, but our defense is winning these tight games for us. We got great contributions from everyone and I like winning these close games against good teams.

"Dell had a big make on the last play. We played hard and smart and executed our plays very well."

Michael Jordan had 28 points and nine rebounds for the Bulls, who have lost two in a row for the third time this season. Chicago had three two-game losing streaks over the previous two seasons, both ending in championships.

Kukoc added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Dennis Rodman pulled down 19 boards.

"I thought that we played really poorly in the second and third quarters. We didn't move the basketball like we're supposed to and we've got to give Charlotte credit for the way they played defense," said Chicago coach Phil Jackson. "Turnovers (20) is what we've got to work on."

Chicago only scored 13 points in the third quarter, and the Hornets took advantage by turning a 43-41 halftime deficit into a 64-56 lead after three quarters.

"I thought Charlotte put good defensive pressure on us and they came out strong in the third quarter and put us on our heels," Jackson said. "Sometimes things don't go your way and we have to overcome that."

Charlotte continued to build its lead, increasing it to 73-61 with 5:02 remaining following a free throw by Rice.

The Bulls responded with a 10-0 spurt in just under three minutes. Jordan scored the first six points and Kukoc finished it with a pair of free throws to make it 73-71 with 2:03 to go.

A jumper by Rice with 1:04 left gave Charlotte a 77-73 edge, but a turnaround jumper by Jordan and and a pair of free throws by Kukoc tied the score at 77-77 with 28 seconds left.

That set up the Hornets' final possession, leading to Curry's game-winning shot, an 18-footer from the left of the key.

"It was a big win because one of the things we did was come out and play aggressive from the start. Things were feeling a lot better for us tonight," said Rice. "When we make our shots and play good in the post we do well as a team. But our defense won the game for us. We feel that if we play like we can, we can pretty much beat anyone."

Chicago used an 11-2 run in the first quarter to jump out to a 26-14 lead. But after scoring 29 points in the first quarter, the Bulls went cold in the second quarter, scoring just 14 points. Led by Curry's seven points, the Hornets cut the deficit to 43-41 at the half.

The Bulls continued to struggle in the third quarter, scoring just 13 points. Clinging to a 57-56 lead late in the period, the Hornets ripped off a 13-2 run. Former Bull B.J. Armstrong finished off the burst with a jumper for a 70-58 lead with 10:11 remaining.

"I'm not sure what really happened tonight," said Rodman. "Our guys must come to play every night. We must be able to play consistent throughout the whole game.

"We've had worse losses that this. This loss in no way will faze us or hurt our pride."
