GAME RECAP

Rik Smits scored a season-high 29 points and Reggie Miller added 28 to lead the Indiana Pacers to a 104-89 victory over the Miami Heat, who had their season-high four-game winning streak stopped.

Antonio Davis tallied 14 points, Dale Davis grabbed 14 rebounds and Mark Jackson handed out a season-high 14 assists for the Pacers, who have won seven of their last nine games. Indiana shot 52 percent (38-for-73) from the field, including 5-for-9 from three-point range.

"We really came to play tonight," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "Usually the first game back after a road trip is pretty tough. But, we knew we were going to play a team that was going to come at us."

Tim Hardaway had 28 points and 10 assists and Jamal Mashburn added 18 points for the Heat, who once again played without center Alonzo Mourning. Mourning, who has not played this season because of a knee injury, is traveling with the team and may return Saturday at Milwaukee.

"It was fiercely contested and they got that run in the third period and got up on us," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "Rik was great. Miller and (Chris) Mullin were hitting shots with guys in their face. Rik was making shots. We blitzed and trapped the ball, but they got a great shooter at the big man."

"This wasn't necessarily the best game we've played all year, but we did execute well and defend well," Miller said. "We were battling fatigue and a time change, but we've got to play games as they are scheduled, play as many minutes that are necessary because that's what they pay us for."

The Pacers took the lead for good, 58-56, when Smits took a pass from Jackson and hit a 15-footer with 7:38 left in the third quarter. Jackson again passed to Smits, who made a 13-footer for a 60-56 lead 35 seconds later. Hardaway sank a three-pointer to pull Miami within 60-59, but Smits converted a three-point play for a 63-59 lead with 6:17 left in the period.

"We played more aggressive in the second half," Smits said. "Coach Bird said, `Let's hit them, before they hit us.' The day off yesterday helped us because the time difference was really a problem and I feel we're starting to jell."

Travis Best made a 21-footer with 10 seconds left in the period to give Indiana a 77-70 advantage. After a steal by Jalen Rose, Best hit a running jumper that just beat the buzzer to give the Pacers a nine-point lead. Indiana built the advantage to as much as 17 points in the final quarter.

Hardaway scored 15 points in the first period as the Heat took a 29-24 lead. Miami maintained the lead throughout the second quarter until Mullin made a pair of free throws to cap a 6-0 burst and tie the game, 45-45, with 58 seconds left. Hardaway made a free throw with 45 seconds remaining but Miller made a 16-footer with 11 seconds to go, giving the Pacers a 47-46 lead at the break.

The Heat shot 45 percent (32-of-71) and made just 17-of-27 foul shots. The Pacers made 23-of-27 from the line.
