GAME RECAP

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 30 points to lead a balanced attack as the Vancouver Grizzlies defeated the Golden State Warriors at home for the first time, 95-88.

Otis Thorpe, Blue Edwards and Sam Mack each added 13 points for the Grizzlies, who won for the first time in 12 games this season when scoring under 96 points. Abdur-Rahim added eight rebounds and five assists and George Lynch grabbed 10 rebounds.

Vancouver was 1-7 against Golden State in its first two seasons, including 0-4 at home. The Grizzlies (8-14) had lost seven of their last eight overall.

"We didn't have much life or enthusiasm at halftime, so coach (Brian Hill) said the game was out for the taking but we had to apply ourselves," said Edwards. "It wasn't a perfect game, but we played a much better third quarter, which was crucial. We were out of rhythm in the fourth quarter and we didn't use enough patience, but we rebounded from that."

Joe Smith scored 17 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and added 10 rebounds for Golden State, which dropped to 1-10 on the road. Donyell Marshall and Erick Dampier chipped in 14 points apiece for the Warriors, who are 2-3 since terminating the contract of All-Star guard Latrell Sprewell.

"I was trying to be aggressive and bring us back in the fourth quarter. We got it down to two after being down by 10," said Smith. "My jumper wasn't falling for me early in the game, but later on I started hitting it and I did whatever I could to bring us back."

Golden State rode Dampier's 11 first-half points to a 48-47 lead at intermission. But Vancouver grabbed a 56-50 lead by starting the third quarter on a 9-2 spurt, capped off by a driving layup by rookie Antonio Daniels.

The Grizzlies extended their lead to 73-63 by holding the Warriors to seven points over the final 7:36 of the quarter. Abdur-Rahim scored six points during the stretch and Lynch finished it with a tip-in.

"I felt like we had the game under wraps throughout," said Abdur-Rahim. "When it was time to win, we did what we had to do. I tried playing aggressively at both ends of the floor tonight. I got fouled a lot and went to the line (12-for-14) and that shows me I'm aggressive enough."

Smith's six points helped Golden State start the fourth quarter with a 10-2 spurt. A 16-foot jumper by Muggsy Bogues with 6:49 remaining pulled the Warriors within 75-73. But the Grizzlies opened a five-point lead one minute later when Bryant Reeves converted a three-point play. Reeves scored 12 points.

After a jumper by Smith with 1:40 left, Lynch made a steal that led to Reeves' dunk and a 90-85 lead with 1:19 to go. Golden State got no closer than four points thereafter.

"We got a big night from Reef (Abdur-Rahim) shooting the basketball," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill. "He looked as good tonight as I've ever seen him. With five guys in double figures I felt we got a well-rounded performance tonight."
