GAME RECAP

Rookie Tim Duncan scored 22 of his season-high 32 points in the first half as the San Antonio Spurs built a 16-point lead and cruised to a 107-78 victory over the injury-riddled Orlando Magic.

Duncan, the top overall draft pick whose previous high was 23 points, scored 14 points in the first quarter as the Spurs took a 34-18 lead. They held a 52-36 halftime advantage as Duncan added eight more in the second quarter.

David Robinson, who teams with Duncan to give the Spurs a pair of seven-footers, contributed 18 points for San Antonio, which has won consecutive games following a three-game losing streak.

Horace Grant scored 14 points to lead the Magic, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. Orlando also fell to 9-2 without injured All-Star guard Penny Hardaway. Hardaway is sidelined eight to 10 weeks after undergoing knee surgery earlier this week.

"San Antonio has the twin towers and they are tough to beat," Grant said. "It looks like they are a Western Conference finals team."

The Magic also played without guard Nick Anderson and forward Derek Strong. Anderson is out with a broken hand and Strong has been hampered by a knee injury.

San Antonio held a 16-12 lead in the opening quarter before taking control with an 8-0 spurt. Vinny Del Negro scored six consecutive points in the burst that gave the Spurs a 24-12 lead with 4:03 left. Orlando got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

The front line of Robinson and Duncan keyed a 6-0 run in the second period which extended the Spurs' lead to 17 points. Robinson had a pair of dunks and Duncan had a layup which pushed the lead to 46-29 with 5:29 remaining.

Duncan and Robinson combined to hit 24-of-33 shots for the Spurs, who shot a healthy 63 percent (49-of-78) from the field. Duncan was 15-of-20, while Robinson connected on 9-of-13 shots in only 24 minutes.

"It was an appropriate time for me to step up because David got into foul trouble," Duncan said. "The ball was coming into me and I got my jump shot going."

The Spurs used an 11-2 burst over the final 3:14 of the third quarter to take a 83-56 advantage into the final period. Avery Johnson scored five points in the surge.

"We jumped out aggressively tonight and took advantage of our size," Robinson said. "Tim played great tonight, just like he did when he was playing against me this summer. This is the best game we've played and we need to keep this thing going."

San Antonio took its biggest lead of the game at 101-66 with 4:16 to play on Malik Rose's layup.

The Magic shot under 40 percent (32-of-81) from the field.
