GAME RECAP

Shareef Abdur-Rahim fell two rebounds shy of a triple-double with 22 points and a career-high 13 assists and Bryant Reeves had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Vancouver Grizzlies to a 110-105 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Abdur-Rahim pulled down eight rebounds for the Grizzlies, who won their second straight game and defeated the Rockets for just the second time in nine meetings.

Otis Thorpe contributed 14 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 58 percent from the field and gave coach Brian Hill his 200th career victory.

"This is probably our best game so far this year," Reeves said. "We did a great job of keeping our spacing on the floor and our offense really clicked. I got some post-ups on the fastbreak and when Shareef got doubled he was able to find us."

Kevin Willis scored 28 points and Charles Barkley collected 22 and 21 rebounds for the Rockets, who have dropped two games in a row following a nine-game winning streak.

Vancouver brought a one-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Houston built a 95-90 lead on two free throws by Clyde Drexler with 6:32 to play. Consecutive three-pointers by Lee Mayberry and Blue Edwards gave the Grizzlies a 96-95 advantage with 5:37 to go. Neither team led by more than one point over the next three minutes.

With 2:25 remaining, Abdur-Rahim dunked over Barkley for a 100-98 lead. He then assisted on George Lynch's bucket to give the Grizzlies a four-point cushion with 1:36 to play. Drexler's jumper eight seconds later cut the deficit to two, but Abdur-Rahim made one free throw to make it 103-100 with 1:16 left.

Willis' 16-footer made it a one-point game before a five-footer by Reeves made it 105-102 with 30 seconds to go. Barkley grabbed an offensive board but missed the putback on Houston's next possession and Lynch hit two foul shots for a 107-102 advantage with 18 seconds to go before Abdur-Rahim hit a pair for a seven-point cushion with 8.5 seconds remaining.

Abdur-Rahim scored 10 points and Sam Mack nine as the Grizzlies raced to a 35-23 lead after one quarter. Barkley had 16 points at the break, but Vancouver's lead was still 60-51 after it shot 56 percent in the period.

"It doesn't matter how I played tonight, the only thing that matters is winning," Barkley said. "It was a heck of a game to lose. They played well and made the plays. You have to give them credit. We played great in the third quarter but just couldn't sustain it."

However, Houston opened the third quarter with a 20-10 spurt fueled by Mario Elie's 11 points. Elie drilled two three-pointers and capped the burst with a three-point play for a 71-70 Houston lead with 7:04 left in the third. Willis added 10 points in the quarter as the Rockets were within 84-83 entering the fourth.

Edwards finished with 13 points and Mack and Pete Chilcutt had 11 apiece for the Grizzlies, who finished at 40-of-69 from the floor and had 37 assists on their 40 baskets.

"This is without question an outstanding win for us," Hill said. "They came in as one of the hottest teams in the league, winning nine out of their last 10, and I couldn't be more proud of our players. I thought we did a great job of sharing the basketball and moving the ball as evidenced by the 37 assists we had in the game."

Drexler had 16 points and 12 assists and Elie added 14 points for the Rockets, who shot 46 percent (41-of-89).
