GAME RECAP

Gary Payton scored 25 points as the Seattle SuperSonics won their fourth straight game and remained nearly automatic against the Los Angeles Clippers with a 109-94 victory.

Dale Ellis netted a season-high 23 points in 26 minutes off the bench and Detlef Schrempf added 15 for the Sonics, who have won 24 of the last 27 meetings between the teams. Seattle has also won 10 of the last 12 in Los Angeles.

"I don't know when we play them again," Los Angeles guard Eric Piatkowski said. "But I don't think or hope it's for a while."

Brent Barry scored 21 points and Lorenzen Wright chipped in with a season high-tying 17 and 14 rebounds for the Clippers, who have dropped four games in a row.

The Clippers stayed close throughout the first 20 minutes, closing within 53-51 on Piatkowski's layup with just under four minutes left in the second quarter. But Ellis shook off a 1-of-10, three-point outing on Sunday against the Clippers, catching fire late in the period and helping Seattle score 11 of the final 13 points of the half to open a 64-53 lead.

Ellis had 18 points at halftime and Hersey Hawkins had five points during the spurt, including a three-pointer at the buzzer.

"The shots were there Sunday night and they were there tonight," Ellis said. "It was just a matter of hitting them. I haven't shot the ball as well as I would like to this year."

"We rode him in the second quarter to a big lead," Seattle coach George Karl said. "We're lucky to have him as a weapon. He's something that most teams don't have."

Seattle assumed its largest lead at 77-61 on a free throw by Schrempf with 3:36 left in the third quarter. But the Clippers fought back, using a 12-3 spurt to close within 80-73 after Barry's bucket with one second left in the period.

Ellis helped the Sonics pull away for good, hitting a pair of from the line and a 21-foot jumper around two free throws by Sam Perkins as Seattle opened an 86-73 cushion with 10:39 to play. Los Angeles got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Vin Baker finished with 14 points for the Sonics, who shot 52 percent (37-of-71) from the field and won for the 13th time in their last 15 games.

"It's unbelievable how easy and good these guys are," Karl said. "There are not many nightmares right now. This team has a professionalism to it. Some of my other teams have been more flamboyant and more powerful and more explosive, but this team is more serious and professional."

Darrick Martin scored 15 points and rookie Maurice Taylor contributed 12 before being ejected for receiving two technicals with just over seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Clippers shot 41.5 percent (34-of-82) and were a dismal 18-of-31 (58 percent) from the foul line.
