GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored 29 points and John Stockton and Jeff Hornacek keyed a 16-0 run as the Utah Jazz cooled off the Miami Heat, 103-95, with their seventh straight win in the series.

Hornacek scored 18 points and Stockton 14 for the Jazz, who have also won six straight games in Miami. Utah has not lost to the Heat since January 7th, 1994 or in Miami Arena since November 19th, 1991.

Stockton had six points and an assist in the burst that began in the first half. The Jazz scored the first 12 points of the third quarter to open a 14-point lead and held on to snap a three-game road losing streak.

"I thought our guys played the best game of the year as far as execution," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They played with a little more spark offensively and we had all five guys running when we wanted to run."

Tim Hardaway had 21 points and 11 assists and Isaac Austin added 18 points for the Heat, who had won seven of their last nine. Austin was matched up against his good friend Malone for much of the game. The two were teammates with the Jazz five seasons ago.

"They have great passers, so it's difficult to try and front him," said Austin, who shot 7-of-16 from the field. "He's great and he's been doing it for so many years."

"I have a birthday wish. ... The wish is that Isaac Austin is on my team next year," said Malone, who made 11-of-21 shots. "And I will take a pay cut if I have to. I'm not surprised he's as good as he is. You guys are surprised. I knew it all along."

A three-pointer by Eric Murdock gave Miami its last lead at 51-49 with 48 seconds left in the first half. But Bryon Russell and Stockton each made two free throws to start the run and end the half with the Jazz holding a 53-51 edge.

Stockton made a pair of baskets 15 seconds apart to open the third quarter and Hornacek added a jumper that made it 59-51 with 10:24 remaining. Stockton fed Malone for a layup and Hornacek added a layup before a jumper by Antoine Carr capped it at 65-51 with 9:02 left.

"We knew they were going to play physical and try to hold and grab," Hornacek said. "We did a good job when they held us cutting to the basket. And it helps when you get quick calls from the referees."

A three-pointer by Voshon Lenard with 9:02 to go in the period ended a scoreless drought of nearly four minutes for Miami. The Heat continued to have trouble on the offensive end and a basket by Malone gave the Jazz their largest lead at 87-70 with 10:30 left in the fourth quarter.

"They got a lot of layups and it really hurt us at the start," Lenard said. "We got down by too many and by that time it was too late."

Malone's free throw gave Utah a 94-79 lead with 6:19 to go, but Lenard scored five points and Austin four in an 11-3 run that cut the deficit to 97-90 with 3:20 left. Malone answered with two free throws and Miami did not score from the field again.

"We had patience and were willing to make the extra pass," said Malone. "We have a decent shot of winning against any team, when you get into an up-and-down game."

"I think this was obviously an eye-opener for us," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We prepared and knew what they were going to do but simply could not stop it. They had 57 points in the paint to our 18. We were very, very fortunate to be even close."

Russell scored 12 points and Howard Eisley added 10 off the bench for the Jazz, who shot 52 percent (38-of-73) from the field despite an 0-for-7 showing from three-point range. Utah had five players with four or more assists, including six from Eisley.

Lenard scored 12 of his 14 points on three-pointers and P.J. Brown added 11 and eight rebounds for the Heat, who shot 41 percent (31-of-75), including 10-of-25 from behind the arc. Hardaway was 7-of-18 from the field.

"Our defense did not stop Tim Hardaway, he just missed shots," Sloan said. "I've been in the league as long as he has. He's one of those guys who every once in a while just doesn't shoot the way everyone expects him to."

Austin scored seven points and Lenard six as Miami grabbed a 27-25 lead after one quarter.
