GAME RECAP

Corliss Williamson scored nine of his 26 points during a key third-quarter run and rookie Michael Stewart grabbed 15 rebounds and tied an Arco Arena record in his first start as the Sacramento Kings downed the Portland Trail Blazers, 94-87.

With the Kings trailing 52-51 midway through the third period, Williamson sank a bucket to spark a 13-2 run. Stewart, who pulled down 11 boards during the quarter, capped the burst on a follow shot with 2:25 left that gave the Kings a 64-54 lead.

"Sometimes when things are going well for you, you have all the confidence in the world," said Williamson. "You know you have to step it up a level as far as physical play (against Portland). I think this is a game where we all have to step it up and be physical."

Stewarts's 11 boards tied the Arco Arena mark set by San Antonio's David Robinson back on December 3rd, 1991.

"I just go in when the coach tells me to," Stewart said. "If he wants to go with another guy, then that's fine with me. But when I'm in there I play hard and I do my job. The only difference between starting and coming off the bench is when your minutes come up."

Stewart gave way to Olden Polynice in the fourth quarter. Polynice, scoreless through three periods, hit a crucial bucket with 5:07 to play which boosted Sacramento's advantage to 80-74. Mitch Richmond followed with a technical free throw and a jumper as the Kings pulled away.

Polynice, the regular starter at center, did not share Stewart's unconcerned attitude on starting the game.

"I do a lot more than (than Stewart). I've earned everything that I've gotten," Polynice said. "You don't start 131 straight games because you can't play, and I guess that's one of the reasons I was hurt.

"I've worked my butt off to get off the bench, to be a starter," Polynice continued, "and now all of a sudden for it to be taken away ... He (Kings coach Eddie Jordan) made a change, but as a working person, for my family's sake and everything else, send me somewhere else."

Arvydas Sabonis scored 23 points and Isaiah Rider 21 for the Blazers, who shot just 39 percent (32-of-83) from the field and suffered their third straight loss.

Sacramento erased a 49-44 deficit early in the third period on a basket and a three-point play by Williamson around a bucket by Richmond. Portland fought back, going ahead 52-51 on a jumper by Rider and a free throw by Rasheed Wallace, but the Kings took the lead as Williamson ignited the decisive charge.

Williamson hit 10-of-12 shots, handed out a team-best six assists and had three blocks while Terry Dehere and Lawrence Funderburke each contributed 12 points off the bench. Bobby Hurley chipped in with eight points and four assists in 21 minutes and Polynice scored his six points in the final quarter.

Portland's Gary Trent, who had 10 points, cut the lead to 78-74 with a lay-in midway through the fourth. But in a crucial turn of events, Wallace collected his sixth foul on Polynice's basket, then was hit with a technical foul for arguing the call. After Polynice missed his chance from the line, Richmond sank the technical shot to swing the momentum to Sacramento.

Richmond hit 6-of-17 from the field and finished with 16 points for the Kings, who got a season-high four steals from Billy Owens.

"We had a mental breakdown tonight," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "We were a bit shorthanded without Brian Grant and we got in foul trouble. To start the second half we didn't do a very good job of executing."

Grant did not play against his former club due to a groin injury.
