GAME RECAP

Shawn Kemp had 21 points and 11 rebounds and powered a 13-0 fourth-quarter run as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the struggling Phoenix Suns, 103-90, for their 11th win in 12 games.

Phoenix held an 82-81 lead with just over seven minutes left when Cleveland reeled off 13 consecutive points to take a 94-82 lead with 3:49 to go. Rookie Derek Anderson got it started with a three-point play off a foul-line jumper at the 6:58 mark and Kemp led the burst with five points.

Anderson scored a season-high 19 points and fellow rookie Brevin Knight added 16, 12 assists and four steals for Cleveland, which had a 10-game winning streak snapped Saturday with an 85-84 loss to Charlotte.

"It was a good win to grab. After a tough loss the other night we wanted to get back on track as soon as possible," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "I thought the fourth quarter was a very good one for us. As long as we stay out of foul trouble and get stops defensively, then we give ourselves a chance to win."

"I think we just needed somebody to step up at both ends and try to give us an energy spurt," said Anderson, who shot 8-of-13 from the field. "I think it is just a matter of knowing that I can do that. I have to take my time and let the offense come to me and let the team give me the ball."

Antonio McDyess scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Steve Nash added 18 points for Phoenix, which dropped its third straight game on a five-game road trip.

The Suns, who have lost three in a row for the first time since last February, began their five-game swing with losses at Minnesota and Chicago. Phoenix has also dropped three straight games at Gund Arena, last winning there on January 30th, 1995.

"We're having a tough time scoring," said Phoenix coach Danny Ainge. "Right now, when we go with a defensive team, we have a tough time scoring. Then we go with an offensive team, with one substitution here or there, and we can't stop anybody. We had open shots but we're just not finishing. We're not playing with much confidence offensively."

Cleveland got nine boards from rookie Zydrunas Ilgauskas and held a 40-30 advantage on the glass. The Cavaliers shot 51 percent (37-for-73) from the field while the Suns hit 46 percent (34-for-74).

Trailing 94-82 with under four minutes left, Phoenix got a dunk from McDyess. But Cleveland answered right back, with Kemp hitting a free throw and then converting a three-point play on a drive with 2:58 remaining, giving the Cavs their biggest lead of the second half, 98-84.

"We had a couple of offensive breakdowns that led to some transition baskets for them and we just couldn't recover," said Phoenix guard Rex Chapman, who finished with 15 points.

The teams traded big runs in the first half. Cleveland was first to strike with a 25-6 burst that went from the end of the first quarter into the second period.

Trailing 18-11, Anderson got the Cavs started with a jumper with 3:35 left in the first quarter. His 15-footer with 9:14 left in the first half finished the run and gave the Cavs a 36-24 lead en route to a 55-50 halftime edge. Anderson had eight points during the rally.

Right after Cleveland opened its 12-point lead, Phoenix went on a 12-5 spurt, led by Nash's eight points, to pull within 41-36 with 6:45 left in the half.

Wesley Person finished with 13 points and four steals for Cleveland in his first game since coming over from the Suns in a trade October 1st. He made a three-pointer in front of the Phoenix bench to extend the lead to 13 points with just under two minutes to play.

"It felt good beating the Suns," said Person. "That shot in the corner was one of the best shots of my career. It was right in front of their bench. It was a great win for me, but we still have to play them again later in the season."
