GAME RECAP

Alonzo Mourning returned too late as the Washington Wizards built a 12-point lead before he took the court for the first time this season and cruised to an 88-74 victory over the Miami Heat, their sixth without a loss in the MCI Center.

Mourning, the Heat's All-Star center who had missed the first 22 games of the season recovering from knee surgery, was booed upon his entrance with 5:48 left in the first quarter and throughout the game.

Mourning appeared to be in great condition, scoring 24 points with nine rebounds and four blocks. He also was his usual menacing presence, with a flagrant foul on Wizards point guard Rod Strickland in the first quarter and a technical foul for a shoving match with Washington center Terry Davis in the third period.

"I wanted to go out and be a positive contributor to a win," Mourning said. "I didn't want to go out there and mess up the flow. I was just trying to focus on defensive plays. You get that back first. The offense will come."

"I thought he played decently, strong," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "He did the things he needs to do."

By the time Mourning made his entrance, the Wizards already had built a 16-4 lead. A three-pointer by Calbert Cheaney extended the margin to 19-4 with 5:15 to go and the Wizards held a 32-12 lead after one quarter. The Heat got no closer than nine points thereafter.

"When the ball comes to me, I've got to be productive with the basketball," said Cheaney, who scored seven points in the first six minutes. "I had some shots. I took them. They have a very physical style of play. We rose to the challenge and played them tough."

"This was a horrible performance on our part," Riley said. "The decisions were poor. It was a blowout. They jumped on the starters and we're down 20. It was a big fight just getting back."

Stickland scored 21 points and Cheaney added 17 for the Wizards, who beat the Heat for the first time in three meetings this year and improved to 6-0 at their new arena.

"Our defense, at critical junctions, did the job for us," said Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "Our guys did not back down. We put our bodies in the way. They did not get many good looks in the three-point area."

Strickland also helped stop Miami All-Star guard Tim Hardaway, who had one of the worst games of his career. Hardaway did not score, shooting 0-of-6 from the field with four turnovers and sitting out the final period. Hardaway scored a combined 51 points in the first two meetings.

"I go about my business the same way every night," Strickland said. "Defensively, you can't play guys different because they did something big against you last time."

Voshon Lenard scored 15 points and Eric Murdock added 14 -- all in the fourth quarter -- for the Heat, who have lost consecutive games for the first time this season and dropped one-half game behind first-place Orlando in the Atlantic Division.

Lenard had a pair of three-pointers and two more long jumpers in the second period as Miami cut the deficit to 48-32 at halftime.

Six straight points by Mourning pulled Miami within 57-48 with 4:26 left in the third quarter. But Washington responded with six points of its own as Ledell Eackles hit a jumper, Strickland made a steal and fed Cheaney for a layup and Strickland turned another steal into his own layup for a 63-48 bulge with 3:09 to go.

Hardaway and Murdock both were held scoreless through the first three quarters. Murdock came alive in the final period and his jumper closed the Heat to 81-71 with 2:16 remaining. But Miami would get no closer.

Eackles scored 14 points off the bench and Chris Webber added 12 and 10 rebounds for the Wizards, who won despite shooting 37 percent (31-of-83) from the field and getting beaten 59-37 on the boards.

Isaac Austin, who has started at center all season in place of Mourning, collected 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Heat, who shot 39 percent (31-of-79) but made just 3-of-16 three-pointers.
