GAME RECAP

Danny Manning scored all of his 13 points in a pair of pivotal runs and the Phoenix Suns used a balanced attack to end a season-high three-game losing streak with an 89-75 victory over the woeful Dallas Mavericks.

Manning came off the bench to score nine points in the decisive second quarter and four in a third-quarter burst as Phoenix also ended a four-game road skid, beating Dallas for the 31st time in the last 37 meetings.

Cliff Robinson scored 17 points, Antonio McDyess added 14 and 14 rebounds and Steve Nash scored 12 points for the Suns, who held the Mavericks to 34 percent shooting (14-of-41) and 30 points in the first half.

"I thought that we played better on defense than we've been playing," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "I think our big guys did a good job of switching out and playing their small guys on the perimeter. Offensively, we're still a team struggling."

Robert Pack scored 23 points and Samaki Walker added 15 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and five blocks for Dallas, which fell to 1-7 with seven straight losses under new coach Don Nelson. The Mavs have been limited to 90 points or less 10 times this season.

"I thought the first half was key," Nelson said. "I couldn't believe we scored 30 points in the first half and we're trying to run. It was a strange game."

Michael Finley scored six of his 18 points in the first quarter as Dallas grabbed an 18-12 lead. The Mavs still held a 24-22 edge after a basket by Walker with 5:15 remaining in the second period before Manning took charge.

A jumper by Manning and a basket and two free throws by Jason Kidd gave Phoenix a 28-24 lead with 3:47 left. Robinson and Pack traded baskets before Manning made a free throw and tipped in his own missed foul shot to cap an 11-2 burst and extend the lead to 33-26 with 1:34 remaining.

The Suns led 38-33 at halftime, but the Mavs closed to 48-45 on a free throw by Pack with 6:09 to play in the third quarter. However, Manning and McDyess scored four points each in a 15-4 spurt that extended the lead to 63-49 with two minutes to go.

A three-point play by Nash gave Phoenix its largest lead at 84-62 with 6:02 to play. Dallas got no closer than the final margin, scoring the last six points of the game.

Kidd and George McCloud scored 10 points apiece for the Suns, who shot just 41 percent (39-of-96) from the field but held a 54-45 rebounding advantage and had six players score in double figures. Manning added eight rebounds.

"The last three games, we didn't play any defense," Kidd said. "Tonight we went with a full rotation and we just believed in guys backing up each other, and that's what happens when you believe in your teammates on the defensive side."

In just his second game since being activated from the injured list, Pack shot 10-of-17 from the field. But his teammates were a combined 22-of-57 (39 percent) and Pack committed seven of his team's 17 turnovers.

"It feels good to be back out there," Pack said. "I still need some WD40. But I think it's coming along. I felt like I tried to force a few things. It'll all come, my timing will come and it will get better."
