GAME RECAP

Sam Perkins drained three of his four three-pointers and scored 10 of his 13 points in the decisive third-quarter run as the Seattle SuperSonics downed the Denver Nuggets, 119-106, earning their fifth straight win.

Vin Baker had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Seattle (20-5), which has won 14-of-16 games overall and owns the league's best record. Gary Payton added 16 points and eight assists as the SuperSonics won their 11th consecutive home game.

"I think every one counts," Baker said. "Every game is as significant as the other games we play against the Phoenix's, the Portland's and all the teams. You have to go out and take care of business."

Leading 66-63 midway through the third quarter, Seattle finished the period with a 23-6 burst. Payton sparked the spurt with a layup before Perkins drained a three-pointer. Detlef Schrempf had nine of his 16 points in the run, which was capped by Perkins' free throw with 18 seconds left for an 89-69 cushion.

"They know when to turn it up. They increase the defensive pressure and that leads to offense," Nuggets coach Bill Hanzlik said. "They're like big-game cats lurking and when you make a mistake, they pounce."

Eric Washington scored 18 points for the Nuggets, who have lost six straight games and remain the only winless team on the road this season (0-13). Denver has lost nine straight games at Seattle and has won there just once in its last 19 trips.

Hersey Hawkins and Dale Ellis contributed 15 points apiece for the Sonics, who have won five straight games against the Nuggets and 11-of-12 overall.

"We got to work on a lot of things," Payton said. "Right now, we're not playing a lot of the top-rated teams, teams under .500. But then when we come back in January, we're going to have to play those top-rated teams. So I think we should get our practice in and try to execute things we really need to work on."

Seattle trailed 19-11 midway through the opening period but closed the quarter with a 21-5 burst to take the lead for good. Hawkins and Payton each had four points on that run, which was also highlighted by three-pointers from Ellis and Perkins.

Hawkins scored 14 points and Ellis added 13 in the first half, helping Seattle to a 60-50 advantage.

"We had good shots and they were falling, then in the third quarter they increased their defensive pressure and we didn't recover," Hanzlik said.

Baker, who had six points in the fourth, was 9-of-14 from the field as the Sonics shot 51 percent (42-of-83) overall. Off the bench, Greg Anthony recorded eight of Seattle's 32 assists, which helped atone for the team's 17 turnovers.

Rookie Danny Fortson scored 14 points off the bench for Denver, which shot 47 percent (36-of-76) from the floor. LaPhonso Ellis had 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and rookie Bobby Jackson contributed 13, six and seven but shot just 6-of-20 from the field.

"You just can't play quickly enough against their defense," LaPhonso Ellis said. "They will pressure you and maintain it. You have to find a gap, and when you do, you must attack the basket. We didn't do that."
