GAME RECAP

Nick Van Exel scored nine of his 24 points in the final 2 1/2 minutes as the Los Angeles Lakers held off the Charlotte Hornets, 109-100, for their league-leading 10th road win.

Van Exel scored half his points in the final period and handed out 11 assists for the Lakers, who again overcame the absence of injured All-Star center Shaquille O'Neal with seven players scoring in double figures.

Los Angeles improved to 3-1 on its five-game road trip, which concludes Monday at Houston, and to 12-6 without O'Neal, who has been sidelined since November 20th with a strained abdominal muscle.

"I thought this would be our hardest win on this road trip," Lakers coach Del Harris said. "The Hornets have been playing terrific and we were just coming out of that win (at Atlanta)."

Glen Rice scored 32 points for the Hornets, who have lost two in a row following a four-game winning streak. Charlotte also had a four-game home winning streak snapped.

Rice scored five points and Anthony Mason four in a 13-4 spurt that was capped by a three-point play by former Laker Vlade Divac and pulled the Hornets within 95-94 with 2:40 remaining.

But Van Exel countered with a runner 12 seconds later. Rice made a jumper, but a three-pointer by Robert Horry -- just his second basket of the game -- gave Los Angeles a 100-96 lead with 1:41 to go.

Rice made two free throws to cut the deficit to two points, but Van Exel made a jumper and a clutch three-pointer to build the lead to 105-98 with 40 seconds to go. He added two free throws in the closing seconds.

"In the final four minutes, we were able to milk it the way we wanted to," Van Exel said. "We were able to run our set plays, basically the pick and roll."

"We had some defensive breakdowns which cost us tonight," said Hornets reserve center Matt Geiger. "Nick Van Exel just rose to the occasion and hit some difficult shots. I thought our defense down the stretch was tough but they just hit some even tougher shots."

Eddie Jones scored 19 points and Rick Fox added 17 for the Lakers, who shot 55 percent (41-of-75) from the field, including 10-of-20 from three-point range. Kobe Bryant scored 13 points, Sean Rooks added 11 and Corie Blount and Sean Rooks 10 apiece.

"There were so many heroes for us," Harris said. "Corie Blount and Sean Rooks were both sick and gave a great performance. Nick was fantastic and in control of the game. Everyone did at least something well. Very seldom do you get a win when you are outrebounded and your opponent shoots over 50 percent."

Mason scored 19 points and Divac added 17 and a season-high 18 boards for the Hornets, who shot 51 percent (35-of-69) but just 4-of-16 from three-point range. Bobby Phills added 14 points.

"Vlade really gave a good effort," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "We went against a really good team playing really well tonight. They can come at you a number of different ways. They're a really unpredictable group. Every time there was a three to hit, they hit it."

Jones scored four points in a 10-2 spurt that gave the Lakers the lead for good midway through the third quarter. Bryant's three-pointer capped the run and gave Los Angeles a 71-65 lead with 5:08 to go in the period.

"In the second half, we were able to make some key stops which allowed us to go ahead and strengthen our lead," Jones said.

A jumper by Campbell with 6:29 to play boosted the lead to 91-81 before the Hornets made their final charge.

Rice and Mason scored 10 points apiece as Charlotte grabbed a 30-26 lead after one quarter, but Jones scored 10 points in the second period as Los Angeles took a 56-54 edge at halftime.
