GAME RECAP

Tom Gugliotta scored nine of his 24 points in the fourth quarter and Kevin Garnett had a tip-in with 5.8 seconds left, giving the Minnesota Timberwolves a come-from-behind 92-91 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Gugliotta's lay-in with 1:43 to play gave the Timberwolves an 88-87 lead, but Lorenzen Wright responded with a follow slam 20 seconds later as the Clippers reclaimed the lead.

After Gugliotta missed two free throws, rookie Maurice Taylor drained a 12-footer to increase the lead to 91-88 with 17 seconds left. But Gugliotta somehow buried a 22-foot jumper with a hand in his face and Clippers forward Rodney Rogers, who had nailed a crucial three-pointer with less than two minutes to go, threw away the inbounds pass.

Terry Porter picked off the errant pass and threw it ahead to Stephon Marbury, whose missed a driving layup. But Garnett, who had 20 points and 14 rebounds, was there to tip it in for a one-point edge.

"He (Rogers) must have thought I had hit a three because they had no timeouts left, they had to get the ball in," Gugliotta explained. "I turned around and saw Terry Porter with the ball. K.G. (Garnett) and I just crashed the boards and K.G tipped it in."

Taylor had a chance to put the Clippers back on top, but his 18-footer banged off the back of the rim. The rebound came back out to him but his off-balance shot was not even close, handing the Clippers their 11th loss in 13 road games.

"December 20th, I guess Christmas came a little early as far as how the game ended up," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "We were fortunate that we had some big guys who made some big plays down the stretch. ... We have lost enough games, close games, down the stretch that you can't feel sorry when all of a sudden you get one."

"We are starting to click as a team. Each game is another step towards jelling and getting closer as a team," Garnett said. "We wanted to cut down on the late game mistakes and we did that."

Darrick Martin had 16 points and seven assists for the Clippers while Wright contributed 15 points and 22 rebounds, notching a career high for the second straight game. Wright shot just 6-of-16 from the field but had 12 offensive boards.

"Most of my offensive rebounds came off shots I was missing," Wright said. "I would shoot one and, (like) Moses Malone, get my own rebounds."

Marbury, who did not start because of a sore right toe, scored just nine points but handed out a season-high 16 assists in 33 minutes. Porter got the start and finished with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Porter drained two three-pointers midway through the fourth quarter to spark a 10-2 spurt, which was capped by Gugliotta's bucket with 5:05 to go for an 84-78 lead. Rogers answered with a layup to spark a 9-2 run and his three-pointer gave the Clips an 87-86 edge with 1:54 left.

Rogers and Lamond Murray scored 15 points apiece for Los Angeles, which has lost five of its last six games.

Minnesota connected on 50 percent (36-of-92) from the field, but made just 14-of-24 free throws. The Clippers were 12-of-13 from the stripe but shot 39 percent (36-of-92) from the floor.

Garnett's three-point play highlighted a 16-4 burst early in the second quarter that gave Minnesota a 38-27 lead.

The Clippers erased a 10-point halftime deficit with a 15-2 run early in the third period. Martin scored 11 of his 13 third-quarter points in that spurt, capping it with a three-pointer for a 55-54 lead with 8:23 to go.
