GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker scored 23 points, including a three-pointer that ended the third quarter and started a 22-4 burst that gave the Boston Celtics a 99-77 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers and a .500 record for the first time in almost a month.

Walker had 11 points in the run and added 15 rebounds and five assists as Boston (12-12) won for the fifth time in six games and is at the break-even mark for the first time since November 26th (7-7). Last season, the Celtics did not win their 12th game until March 3rd.

"I couldn't complain about the shots I was getting," said Walker, who shot 8-of-25 from the field. "They weren't doubling me and I wasn't used to that. I don't care if I shoot 2-for-20, if we win, I am happy. Tonight was easier than other nights because they weren't doubling me, but my shots weren't falling."

"Walker played great tonight," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "He could easily have had 15 assists."

Dana Barros scored 17 points and rookie Ron Mercer added 14 for Boston, which outscored Los Angeles 33-13 in the fourth quarter. The Celts established their best defensive effort for the second straight game.

"We have a tough (three-game) road coming up," Barros said. "We have to prepare ourselves for the tough Christmas road trip. We're playing 11 or 12 guys and we're wearing down the other team."

"I don't believe we're beating the teams we should be beating," Pitino said. "We're a very young team. Who are we to say we should be beating this team or that team? The confidence will come. I see it building now with every game."

Rodney Rogers scored 20 points and Lorenzen Wright added 14 and 19 rebounds for the Clippers, who have dropped five of seven overall and 12 of 14 on the road.

"We made bad decisions," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "They kept playing their game and we didn't. The fourth quarter was their ballgame. I can't believe we've got another game to play before we get home."

The Clippers held a one-point lead until Walker's 25-footer at the third-quarter buzzer gave the Celtics the lead for good at 66-64. Boston went on to score 19 of the first 23 points of the final period, with Walker's steal setting up a three-point play by rookie Chauncey Billups that extended the lead to 85-68 with 5:29 to play.

Wright scored six points and Lamond Murray added six of his nine in the first quarter as the Clippers opened a 20-19 lead. Barros scored nine points in the second quarter as the Celtics pulled into a 46-46 halftime tie. Rogers scored 11 points in the third quarter.

Billups scored 11 points and Walter McCarty added 10 for Boston, which shot 45 percent (40-of-89) from the field and forced 26 turnovers, converting them into 30 points.

Brent Barry scored 10 points for Los Angeles, which shot just 38 percent (28-of-74) and battled to a 47-47 deadlock on the glass.

"It wasn't the press. We can break the press," Rogers said. "We just kept hurting ourselves. We didn't take our time. We were always in a rush and kept trying to make the great play."

Before the game, the Celtics placed center Pervis Ellison and guard Dontae Jones on the injured list and activated guard Dee Brown and forward Roy Rogers, who wore uniform number 99.
