GAME RECAP

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Blue Edwards added nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Vancouver Grizzlies collected their 10th win of the season with an 88-86 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Rookie Antonio Daniels had 14 points for the Grizzlies (10-17), who reached double figures in victories at the earliest point in their brief franchise history. They did not get 10 wins until January 25th of their first season and until February 12th last season.

Vancouver snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the fourth time in its last 14 games. However, the Grizzlies are 6-2 at home against Western Conference teams.

Isaiah Rider had 19 points and Arvydas Sabonis added 18 for the Trail Blazers, who had beaten the Grizzlies seven straight times.

Portland had a 70-62 lead with 11:11 to play after a bucket by Rider, but Abdur-Rahim scored five straight points to get within 70-67 with 8:43 left. Rider and Edwards traded three-pointers as Portland maintained a three-point lead with 7:56 left.

Gary Trent hit a jumper to push the Blazers' lead to 75-70, but the Grizzlies took off on a 12-0 burst to seize the lead. Consecutive baskets by Adbur-Rahim and George Lynch cut the deficit to 75-74 before a double-technical foul was called on Portland's Brian Grant. Edwards hit two free throws to give Vancouver the lead for good at 76-75.

Edwards scored again to increase the Grizzlies' lead to three before buckets by Bryant Reeves and Abdur-Rahim capped the spurt and gave the Grizzlies an 82-75 advantage with 3:53 to go.

"Shareef stepped up big time," Rider said. "If it wasn't for him they don't win the game. I think we let them back in the game by turning it over and taking too many quick shots."

A three-pointer by Rider and two free throws by Sabonis brought the Blazers within two points with 2:30 left. Reeves answered with a jumper, but Sabonis followed with three straight points to make it 84-83 Vancouver with 80 seconds remaining. Neither team scored for the next minute before Daniels hit a pair of free throws for an 86-83 lead with 20 seconds to play.

After a timeout, Edwards stole Alvin Williams' sideline inbounds pass and scored for an 88-83 advantage with 17 seconds left. Rider hit a jumper, and after Abdur-Rahim missed a pair of free throws, Edwards inexplicably fouled Dontonio Wingfield on the second miss. Wingfield made the first and intentionally missed the second, but the Blazers were unable to put in the miss.

Sabonis and Grant each had six points as Portland raced to a 25-14 lead after one quarter. The Blazers maintained a safe lead throughout the second period and led 43-36 at halftime behind 10 points from Rasheed Wallace.

"We were extremely disappointed at the half," Daniels said. "We knew we could win this game and that was the most upsetting aspect. Coach (Brian) Hill didn't scream or yell at us at halftime, he was real positive in the room. We focused hard and did the things we had to do to win in the second half."

But Vancouver came back in the third quarter behind 11 points from Abdur-Rahim. The Grizzlies used an 11-2 run late in the period to close within 64-60 on Sam Mack's three-pointer with 1:45 to go and entered the fourth down 68-62.

Reeves finished with 12 points for the Grizzlies, who shot 43 percent (31-of-72) from the field. Pete Chilcutt grabbed 10 rebounds, helping Vancouver to a 47-45 rebounding advantage. The Grizzlies had been outrebounded in each game of their seven-game losing streak to the Trail Blazers.

"As poorly as we played, that was certainly a game that we could use to win," Hill said. "At the end of the year all they will remember though is whether or not you win the game."

Wallace scored 14 points and Grant and Williams contributed 12 apiece for Portland, which shot 41 percent (33-of-80). Guard Kenny Anderson played just six minutes and was scoreless with one assist.
