GAME RECAP

Allan Houston scored 19 points as the New York Knicks began life without Patrick Ewing with their best defensive effort of the season in a 79-67 victory over the punchless Dallas Mavericks, who have lost nine straight games.

Larry Johnson added 18 points and John Starks 13 for the Knicks, who learned Sunday that they will be without their All-Star center for the remainder of the season. Ewing suffered a dislocation and torn ligaments of his right wrist in a fall at Milwaukee on Saturday, and the Knicks used three forwards instead of reserve center Chris Dudley in their starting lineup.

"Very few believe we can win, but those in the locker room believe we can win and that's important," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "There is no bail out, there is no luxury of a franchise player. They are going to have to play with heart for 48 minutes."

New York, which won its 10th straight home game, allowed a season low in points. The Knicks, who had held two opponents to 70 this season, gave up their lowest total since a 75-65 victory over Cleveland on January 29th.

Dennis Scott scored 18 points and Michael Finley added 13 for the Mavericks, who fell to 1-9 under former Knicks coach Don Nelson. Dallas has lost eight straight road games and has been held below 70 points three times this season.

The Mavericks have not won since beating the Knicks in Dallas on December 4th in Nelson's first game.

"Tonight the Knicks responded with Patrick out," Nelson said. "We tried to slow the game down, but they had the guns."

The Knicks seized control late in the first quarter. With New York leading by one point late in the period, Johnson had a layup and an 11-foot jumper around a running jumper by Houston to push the lead to 15-8.

A hook shot by Buck Williams and a layup by Starks opened the second period and gave New York its first double-digit lead at 23-12 with 10:39 remaining in the quarter. A.C. Green's jumper cut the deficit to nine, but Houston hit a free throw and added a six-foot jumper to boost New York's lead to 26-14 with 8:17 left in the half.

Johnson and Houston each had 10 points as the Knicks built a 34-25 lead at halftime. Dallas scored 22 points in the third period -- it's only quarter of more than 20 -- but still trailed 59-47 entering the fourth.

"We had to focus and be unselfish to get it done," Houston said. "Sometimes we are bailed out because Patrick gets it done. Sometimes we stand and watch Patrick, now we have to get it done. We look at this as our opportunity."

Scott's layup early in the fourth cut the Knicks' lead to 59-50. But Williams answered with a hook and Johnson followed with a bucket to make it 63-50 with 10:29 left. After a three-pointer by Starks, Johnson scored three straight points to cap the 10-0 spurt and give New York its largest lead at 69-50 with 8:20 to go.

Williams finished with 12 points for the Knicks, who shot 41 percent (35-of-86) from the floor. Chris Mills had 10 rebounds and Johnson and Charles Oakley grabbed eight each, helping New York to a 44-36 advantage on the boards.

Robert Pack scored 11 points and Green and former Knick Hubert Davis had 10 each for the Mavericks, who shot 39 percent (24-of-62).
