GAME RECAP

Sam Cassell scored 28 points and keyed a fourth-quarter run that broke open a close game and Kendall Gill added 18 points as the New Jersey Nets handed the slumping Orlando Magic their fourth straight loss, 99-88.

Cassell scored six points and rookie Keith Van Horn five as New Jersey expanded a 76-74 lead with an 11-0 run to open the final period. Sherman Douglas also netted 16 points off the bench and Kerry Kittles had 12 and a season-high 11 rebounds as the Nets hit 46 percent (40-of-87) of their shots and halted a four-game road losing streak.

"He's (Cassell) a tough competitor. He tried to back me in," said Orlando's Darrell Armstrong, who tried to cover Cassell. "He kept getting into the middle and turning around for the jumpshot."

Mark Price had a season-high 23 points and seven assists and Horace Grant added 18 points, 11 boards and a season-high seven assists for Orlando, which led until a layup by Douglas put the Nets ahead for good with 5:55 left in the third quarter.

Gill scored 10 of his points in the first quarter as New Jersey took a 32-29 edge. After a tight second quarter, the Nets clung to a 55-54 halftime advantage.

New Jersey fell behind by as many as three points in the third quarter before taking the lead for good. Douglas and Gill sank layups as the Nets forged a three-point lead and held a two-point lead after three quarters.

It was a two-man show for New Jersey for the first 3 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter.

Van Horn, who hit 6-of-20 shots and finished with 16 points and seven boards, ignited the deciding burst with a layup 44 seconds into the quarter. Cassell followed with a jumper and Van Horn drained a three-pointer before Cassell scored the last four points with a jumper and lay-in.

"I had my hand in his face, almost on the ball and he still hit it," Armstrong said. "Give him credit, he knocked down shots when his team needed it."

Rony Seikaly's dunk with 8:10 left ended the run and pulled Orlando within 87-76, but the Magic managed just 12 more points in the quarter to continue their longest losing streak of the season.

Seikaly had 16 points and nine rebounds but committed six of Orlando's 23 turnovers, which the Nets turned into 27 points. The Magic shot 48 percent (34-of-71) from the field and were outrebounded, 39-32.

Orlando fell into a second-place tie with the New York Knicks, two games behind the Miami Heat in the Atlantic Division.

New Jersey committed just 12 turnovers in winning for the third time in four games.

"This team has a new attitude and a lot of talent here," Van Horn said. "We play hard and smart every night, we are going to win some ballgames here."
