GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 27 points and coach Phil Jackson recorded his 500th career victory in an NBA-record 682 games as the Chicago Bulls rallied to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers, 94-89, for their fifth straight win.

Jackson raised his career record to 500-182 for a .733 winning percentage. He broke Pat Riley's previous record of reaching 500 wins in 684 games.

"I congratulated him on reaching a milestone faster than anybody else. I told him I was proud of him and that a lot of people were proud of him," said Clippers coach Bill Fitch, who was also Jackson's college coach at North Dakota. "Phil and I go back 30 years, but we have never lost contact. I remember going to see him in his first game in New York with the Knicks. I also went to see him when he first came into the league as a coach. I couldn't be happier for a nicer guy."

"It was nice to get this milestone against my coach and mentor, Bill Fitch," said Jackson. "Both Bill and Red Holzman reached that pinnacle and it's a great accomplishment to be in the company of my former coaches. I have to give credit to Jerry Krause and his staff who went out and found us players of quality, both as people and as basketball players."

Dennis Rodman pulled down a season-high 25 rebounds and Steve Kerr added 13 points for the Bulls, who have won the last six meetings with the Clippers and defeated them for the 25th time in 29 games since the franchise moved to Los Angeles. Chicago also improved to 12-1 at the United Center this season.

Rodney Rogers scored 20 points and Lorenzen Wright had 16 rebounds for the Clippers, who lost for the seventh time in eight games. Los Angeles has dropped 13 of its last 15 on the road.

"Our guys gave them a tough game and they deserve a lot of credit for it," said Fitch. "We're still learning how to win. With Loy Vaught out we need more firepower. We won the battle of the boards in the first half and they wore us down and controlled the boards in the second half."

In the other meeting between the teams this season, Jordan scored an NBA season-high 49 points to lead the Bulls to a 111-102 double-overtime victory on November 21st.

"We just tried to pull out the ballgame. We missed some easy shots and it seemed like they were snakebitten a bit," said Jordan. "We had more opportunities as the game went on. I think Rodman was the key to the win for us tonight. He gave us a lot of second-chance shots that we were able to capitalize on."

With six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Maurice Taylor hit a single free throw to give the Clippers a 79-72 lead.

Chicago then exploded with a 17-4 run to gain control of the game. Kerr started off the spurt with a three-pointer at the 5:48 mark to make it 79-75.

Jordan pulled the Bulls into an 81-81 tie with 4:04 to go after hitting a pair of free throws. After Darrick Martin (19 points) missed a three-point attempt, Jordan hit another free throw at 3:29 to give the Bulls their first lead of the game, 82-81.

Martin hit both ends of a 1-and-1 opportunity to give Los Angeles an 83-82 advantage with 2:28 left, but Luc Longley tied the game with a free throw 13 seconds later.

After Brent Barry missed a driving shot off the glass, Longley gave the Bulls the lead for good at 85-83 with 1:25 remaining with a hook shot in the lane over Keith Closs.

A Rodman tip-in at 1:04 and a turnaround jumper by Jordan with 29.2 seconds left finished off Chicago's 17-4 burst, giving it an 89-83 lead. Kerr hit five of six attempts from the line down the stretch.

"This is a game that I thought the players came out without the same intensity they've had in the past," said Jackson. "The Clippers were a tough opponent for us. Hopefully, it was a good lesson not to take teams lightly.

"Dennis and Michael kept us in the game. Rodman was sensational on the boards. He helped turn the tide for us in the second half."

The Clippers jumped out to a 19-9 lead midway through the first quarter following a Rogers fastbreak dunk. Rogers led all scorers with 16 points in the first half, and the Clippers held a 10-point lead five different times. The last time was with 2.2 seconds left in the second quarter, at 49-39, following two free throws by Pooh Richardson.

Chicago opened the third quarter with a 9-0 spurt, with a basket by Ron Harper pulling the Bulls to within one, 49-48, at 7:56.

The Clippers then opened up a seven-point lead, 57-50, off an 8-2 run. Wright's two free throws finished it off at 4:56. The Clippers held that lead until Jordan's fourth-quarter free throws during the Bulls' 17-4 run.

The Bulls outrebounded the Clippers, 60-42, including 33-14 on the offensive glass.

"It was an ugly way to get it for him but somehow we got it," said Jordan about Jackson's milestone. "Phil is very deserving of this. He's done a heck of a job building this program and keeping us focused and united. It says a lot about his coaching ability and his relationship with the players because we all go out and play hard for him. We all have a lot of respect for him."
