GAME RECAP

Arvydas Sabonis had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Kenny Anderson scored eight of his 17 points during a key fourth-quarter run as the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Sacramento Kings, 93-82.

Portland led 70-62 after three quarters and used a 10-3 run at the start of the fourth to widen the gap. Gary Trent scored six points during the burst, which built the margin to 80-65 with 7:50 to play.

The Kings scored the next eight points to close within 80-73 with four minutes remaining, but Anderson netted the Blazers' next eight points to help bump the advantage to 88-76 with just over two minutes left.

"I was a little winded, but felt comfortable out there, especially in the fourth quarter," said Anderson, who did not start due to a leg injury. "I didn't want to force anything early, just play within the team concept."

Brian Grant chipped in with 17 points and 12 boards for Portland, which had lost four of its previous five games. The Blazers have won four straight against Sacramento in The Rose Garden, last losing there to the Kings on November 16th, 1995.

Mitch Richmond poured in 30 points, while Billy Owens and Corliss Williamson each added 18 for Sacramento, which was trying for its first three-game winning streak of the season. The Kings have dropped 10 of their last 11 on the road.

"They outworked us, they outrebounded us," said Kings coach Eddie Jordan. "Mitch Richmond played a great game for us, but he got tired and heavy-legged. It was our fourth game in five nights."

The first half featured 13 lead changes and seven ties as Portland assumed a 45-42 edge at the break. Grant had 12 points, while Richmond and Williamson combined for 28 of the Kings' points.

The Blazers were still up 53-50 before Trent's two free throws with 2:51 left in the third period capped a 7-0 run and made it 60-50. Richmond had 25 points heading into the final quarter, but Sacramento trailed, 70-62.

Trent finished with 14 points off the bench, while Rasheed Wallace had 10 and nine boards for Portland, which held a commanding 52-34 edge on the boards. The Blazers made just 2-of-10 three-point tries and committed 20 turnovers.

Olden Polynice grabbed 10 rebounds and scored all eight of Sacramento's bench points. The Kings shot 39.5 percent (32-of-81) from the floor, but were 16-for-18 from the foul line.

"I was really pleased with the way we went after it on defense," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "We held them to 39 percent shooting, which is big. And it was one of our better rebounding games in some time. Overall, we just played tough all night."
