GAME RECAP

Rookies Derek Anderson and Cedric Henderson had career highs of 24 and 20 points, respectively, as the Cleveland Cavaliers handed the Dallas Mavericks their 10th straight loss, 99-85.

Anderson collected 11 points to personally outscore Dallas in the third quarter as Cleveland erased an eight-point halftime deficit by winning the period, 32-8. It gave the Cavaliers a 73-57 lead.

"(Coach) Fratello was really fired up at halftime," said Anderson. "We didn't pressure their guards in the first half and gave them open shots. Right now I am taking my time and getting some open looks and starting to slow down. Earlier in the season, I was just running and dunking. I feel I am getting smarter playing this game."

Shawn Kemp added 14 points and 11 rebounds for Cleveland, which has won its last two games after dropping three of four. The Cavs have captured the last five meetings with Dallas and five of six at home.

Michael Finley poured in 29 points and Khalid Reeves added 18 for the Mavericks, who have lost 10 games in a row for the second time this season. Dallas also has dropped nine straight on the road.

"It's discouraging to lose, but at the same time you have to think what we are going through," said Finley. "We're going through a second coach and we're basically learning on the run and trying to learn his systems. He wants us to win, but he wants us to improve each game and each practice."

Dallas held a 23-20 lead after 12 minutes thanks to 12 points from Finley, and extended the gap to 49-41 at the break. A.C. Green's jumper 1:18 into the second half bumped the score to 51-41 before the roof caved in for the Mavericks.

Cleveland scored the next 10 points, including four from Kemp, to even the score at 51-51 with 8:01 left. Finley hit a three-pointer to give the Mavs a three-point lead, but Anderson's jumper with 5:35 to go would cap an 8-0 run that gave the Cavs a 59-54 advantage.

Samaki Walker ended the Cleveland burst with a free throw, but Anderson scored five points in another 8-0 spurt that made it 67-55 with 2:50 left. The Cavaliers also scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 73-57 lead into the fourth period.

"I think you saw a complete turnaround when the third quarter began," said Cavs coach Mike Fratello. "We really had our hands full at halftime because Dallas was playing at a much higher energy level than we were. Then we kicked it in gear. Our defense really took hold during the third quarter stretch and our defense converted to easy offense and got us back into the game right away."

"It (third quarter) just killed us," said Dallas coach Don Nelson. "It's not the first time either, you should be with us on a day-to-day basis. It's just been our worst quarter all year long. Our game plan was solid and they found some holes in it in the second half, which coaches do. We paid the price, but overall, guys executed great."

The Mavericks rallied by beginning the quarter with a 16-5 surge. Reeves and Hubert Davis each scored five points in the run that narrowed the deficit to 78-73 with 8:15 remaining. The teams traded points before Wesley Person converted a layup and Henderson had a basket to bump the lead to 84-75 with 6:31 to play.

"I was surprised I was getting some looks early in the game," said Henderson. "They let me open, so I took the ball to the hoop. It feels good to get 20 points, especially when you win."

Rookie Brevin Knight chipped in 14 points and 15 assists for the Cavs, who was 19-for-22 (86 percent) from the foul line and won the rebounding battle, 45-32.

Davis contributed 12 points off the bench for Dallas, which shot 42 percent (31-of-74) from the floor.
