GAME RECAP

John Stockton scored four of his 24 points in the final 53 seconds and Jeff Hornacek added 20 points and nine assists as the Utah Jazz posted a 107-103 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Houston held a 96-95 lead with 4:45 remaining before Karl Malone, Bryon Russell and Stockton all hit layups to give the Jazz a 101-96 lead with 1:49 to play. But Mario Elie answered with a three-pointer and Kevin Willis hit two foul shots with 64 seconds remaining to even the score at 101-101.

Stockton, who only had three assists, then took over, hitting a jumper with 53 seconds to go and converting two free throws with 17.6 seconds left to build a 105-101 Utah lead. Willis tipped in a Charles Barkley miss seven seconds later, but Russell made both his free throws after being fouled for the final margin.

"Without a doubt it was the best game Stockton's played since coming back from his injury," said Malone. "He was pulling up on the jumpers, which I think when he first came back he was a little reluctant to do, and now he's tested his knee more and more and he's just getting better and better."

Malone, who led Utah in scoring the last 25 games, finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Jerry Sloan recorded his 500th coaching victory with the Jazz, who have won four of their last five overall and eight in a row at home. Sloan, who coached Chicago from 1979-82, is six wins shy of 600 in his career.

"We're starting to jell a little bit," said Russell. "Now we all know what we're doing. Stock's back in the lineup so everyone is playing a little more freely and not worrying about anything, knowing Stockton's there."

Willis totaled 25 points and eight boards, while Elie and Clyde Drexler each scored 15 points for Houston, which has dropped three games in a row overall and four straight on the road.

"Their (Jazz) execution was phenomenal," said Willis. "They executed to a T, and they cost us back door passes for layups several times late in the game and that's what hurt us. Stockton hit huge shots down the stretch."

The Jazz trailed by a point at halftime but scored the first seven points of the third quarter, capped with a three-pointer by Stockton with 10:46 left that made it 56-50.

Utah used a 9-2 run to assume an 85-73 advantage with 1:25 to go in the period before Matt Bullard netted five of his 10 points in a 9-0 spurt that drew the Rockets to within 85-82 50 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Howard Eisley registered 12 points and five assists off the bench, while Adam Keefe scored 11 points for Utah, which shot 55 percent (41-of-74) from the floor and 87 percent (20-for-23) from the line.

"We made our free throws, we shot the ball pretty well," said Sloan. "This is a good basketball team and maybe we were a little sluggish since we had been on the road, but fortunately we had enough to win the game."

Barkley totaled 11 points and seven rebounds as the Rockets shot 44 percent (33-of-75) from the field and had no blocked shots.

"I thought it was a heck of a game," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We wanted to take out their layups and it's something we work on real hard. Soon as you make a mistake, they were very sharp on that. They did what they had to do to win this game."

The teams were meeting for the first time since Stockton drained the game-winning three-pointer with 2.8 seconds remaining in Game Six of last season's Western Conference finals. The Jazz have won the last three regular-season matchups to take a 61-60 lead in the all-time series.
