GAME RECAP

David Wesley scored six of his 20 points in a decisive fourth-quarter run and Glen Rice added 26 points as the Charlotte Hornets held on to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers, 96-88, tightening the Central Division standings.

Wesley scored six consecutive points in an 8-0 run that opened a 90-81 lead with 1:54 remaining. Vlade Divac started the burst with a pair of free throws with 4:43 left, giving the Hornets a 84-81 advantage.

Divac finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds and Rice made 14-of-15 free throws for Charlotte, which shot 86 percent (30-of-35) from the line and 47 percent (31-of-66) from the field.

"We made our free throws," said Hornets coach Dave Cowens. "That is important because it wins games. We shot like we should tonight.

"David had a super game and stepped up for us in the fourth quarter. Vlade played an exceptional game by scoring and grabbing rebounds. Glen went to the line often and made them."

Wesley Person scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds for Cleveland, which shot 58 percent (33-of-57) from the floor but attempted just 21 free throws, making 17.

"We laid it on the line tonight," said Person, who committed three of the team's 25 turnovers. "We made a run in the second half and made a game of it. We just didn't take care of the ball down the stretch."

Derek Anderson added 13 points, all in the fourth quarter. He followed fellow rookie Zydrunas Ilgauskas' missed free throw to pull the Cavaliers within 82-81 with 4:49 to play. Ilgauskas finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

"We only had 57 shots at the basket. That's not enough with as many turnovers as we had," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello, whose club matched the fourth-lowest shot total in NBA history. "They did a nice job. They deserve it."

Charlotte used a 9-0 run to open a 49-38 lead, its biggest of the game, late in the second quarter. Rice scored five points during the spurt, which was capped by Divac's jumper with 1:39 left in the half.

"We weren't ready to play," said Cleveland's Shawn Kemp. "You could see it in the first half. We just didn't show up at the start of the game. Hopefully, we won't get in the habit of doing this. We've got to be ready every night, especially on the road."

Anthony Mason totaled 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Hornets, who moved into a fourth-place tie with the Cavaliers, one game behind Indiana and Chicago and 2 1/2 behind first-place Atlanta in the Central Division.

Kemp added 12 points and nine rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Cavaliers rookie guard Brevin Knight had nine points and seven assists before leaving in the third quarter with a sprained left ankle. He did not return.

"This is a good team (Cleveland) and a big win for us," said Cowens. "This team is well-coached and they executed well."
