GAME RECAP

Calbert Cheaney scored 21 points and made a key steal in the closing seconds as the Washington Wizards held on and dealt the Dallas Mavericks their 11th straight loss, 97-95.

Chris Webber scored nine of his 17 points in the fourth quarter for the Wizards, who extended their season-high winning streak to six games despite nearly blowing an eight-point lead in the final 2 1/2 minutes. Tracy Murray and Juwan Howard scored 20 points apiece.

"That's not the way you want to plan it, but it's a good thing we pulled it out," Webber said. "We've been putting it together and playing the way we should."

Michael Finley had 23 points, a season-high 10 rebounds and five assists for the Mavericks, who dropped to 1-11 under new coach Don Nelson. Dallas has 12 double-digit losing streaks since 1991, including two this season.

A lane jumper by Howard gave the Wizards a seemingly safe 91-83 lead with 2:33 to play. But Khalid Reeves had a pair of baskets around a layup by Samaki Walker, cutting the deficit to 91-89 with 45 seconds to play.

Reeves missed a free throw following his second hoop and Rod Strickland found Webber with his 14th assist for an alley-oop dunk and a 93-89 lead with 29 seconds left.

Dennis Scott cut the deficit to one point with a three-pointer with 22.7 seconds remaining and the Mavericks almost forced a 10-second violation before Reeves fouled Strickland with 13.6 seconds to go. Strickland made both free throws, and Cheaney stole the ensuing inbounds pass and went in for the clinching dunk with 10.8 seconds remaining.

"We got lackadaisical," Cheaney said. "We established a lead. We were going through the motions, and they were getting back into it."

"The decisions made by the players are not always the way you want them to be, and you live and die by what the players do out on the court," Nelson said. "It is great to be in a position to win games down the stretch like tonight. When you're out of games early, it is no fun."

Strickland scored 13 points and Terry Davis grabbed 10 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 44 percent (38-of-86) from the field and allowed the Mavs to stay close by missing 14-of-33 free throws.

"Defensively down the stretch, we were awfully good," Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "But they hurt us on the offensive boards. A couple times they had big shots late in the game, but we found a way to get it done."

Reeves and Scott scored 22 points apiece for Dallas, which shot 43 percent (37-of-86) and held a 49-42 edge on the glass. But the Mavs committed 21 turnovers while forcing just 11.

A basket by Eric Riley, who later strained his Achilles' tendon, pulled Dallas into its final tie at 70-70 with 11:05 to play. Finley's hoop cut the deficit to 78-77 with 8:32 to before the Wizards took control with a 9-2 run.

Howard made a six-footer and Webber sank a three-pointer before Finley scored again, making it 83-79 with seven minutes left. Howard dunked and Strickland made two free throws, extending the advantage to 87-79 with 4:53 to go.

Cheaney scored nine points in the first quarter as Washington grabbed a 30-23 lead. Scott had nine in the second period as Dallas closed to 47-46 at halftime and the Wizards held a 69-68 edge entering the final period.

"We got off to a slow start and made up for it in the second quarter," said Mavs guard Robert Pack, who scored just three points. "We were in position to win it in the fourth quarter, and unfortunately we came up short."
