GAME RECAP

Voshon Lenard and Tim Hardaway each scored 15 points and the Miami Heat used a key second-quarter run to gain control in an 88-74 victory over the Detroit Pistons, their fifth straight win at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Holding a 32-30 lead with under four minutes left in the second quarter, Miami went on a 17-8 spurt over the rest of the period to take a 49-38 lead at halftime. Lenard and Eric Murdock scored four points apiece in the burst, which was capped by Hardaway's three-pointer.

Alonzo Mourning chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds and P.J. Brown grabbed 12 boards for Miami, which recorded it seventh straight win over Detroit and improved to 7-6 on the road. The last time the Pistons defeated the Heat was over two years ago, on December 22nd, 1995.

"We came and bounced back today," said Miami coach Pat Riley, whose club lost at Chicago on Christmas. "At times our defense was really good. They got some good shots but some were also forced. Our guys played hard. Our defens and rebounding were very good and we had more of a mental toughness tonight to stay in the game."

Brian Williams had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Grant Hill 15 and nine for the Pistons, who had their five-game home winning streak snapped.

Miami was outrebounded 48-44, but held Detroit to 37 percent shooting (26-for-73) while making 43 percent (34-for-79) of its own shots. The Heat also turned 18 Detroit turnovers into 21 points.

"It was extremely important for us to bounce back to get the win and our defense was the factor," said Mourning. "Our defense was the factor. We got a lot of deflections. Our help defense was there tonight. It was an overall collective effort. We made stops and caused turnovers."

Detroit cut its 11-point halftime deficit to 49-42 with 9:44 left in the third quarter on a layup by Williams. But with Lenard scoring 10 points, Miami built its advantage back to 69-53 by the end of the period.

The Heat maintained control in the fourth quarter, and the closest the Pistons would come was 69-57 with 10:44 remaining after Williams hit a pair of free throws.

"We got off to a good start and had a good first quarter. After that, we went miserably downhill," said Detroit coach Doug Collins. "We were out of sync offensively and defensively. Give the Heat credit. They're a terrific defensive team. When you're playing against a team that is a contender to come out of the East, they bring out your weaknesses and they obviously did that tonight."

Williams scored six points in the first quarter, when Detroit opened a 21-19 lead.

The Heat grabbed a 30-25 lead with 7:40 left in the first half, using a 9-2 spurt. Issac Austin opened and closed the run with layups.

In order for the Pistons to move forward, Williams feels that the incumbent team members have to mesh with the two players recently acquired from Philadelphia, Eric Montross and Jerry Stackhouse. Montross have five points and four rebounds and Stackhouse 11 points, but he only shot 3-of-9 from the floor.

"I think the only comeback we had tonight was coming back to the locker room," said Williams. "Everyone just has to refine their niche. You don't want to have any chinks in your armor or anything you need to work out going up against Miami, or teams of that caliber."
