GAME RECAP

Kevin Willis and Clyde Drexler scored 26 points each and Brent Price sank a pair of key three-pointers down the stretch as the Houston Rockets ended the Washington Wizards' six-game winning streak with a 111-101 victory.

The Rockets also snapped a three-game losing streak in extending their home dominance of Washington, beating the erstwhile Bullets for the fifth straight time at the Compaq Center.

Willis scored 19 points in the first half, including seven in a 13-0 second-quarter run as Houston built a 16-point bulge.

The Wizards crawled back from a 61-48 halftime deficit and trailed 92-87 midway through the final period. But Price hit his third three-pointer of the game to boost the lead to eight points. Washington got as close as three points before Mario Elie and Price sealed the victory with three-pointers in the final minute.

Price hit all four of his three-pointers in the second half for the Rockets, who were 8-of-13 from behind the arc in the second half and 10-of-20 overall. Price finished with 12 points and three steals.

"Brent Price stepped up big tonight," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "Not only making threes, but also making some big defensive plays."

Chris Webber netted 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Tracy Murray added 21 points off the bench for the Wizards, who hit 51 percent (41-of-81) from the field but missed 10-of-27 shots from the line.

The Rockets snapped a 7-7 tie and went ahead for good midway through the first period. Clyde Drexler sank an eight-footer, Elie dunked and Charles Barkley hit a five-footer as Houston opened a 14-7 lead.

Barkley had 18 points and 14 boards as the Rockets' veteran frontcourt more than held their own with its youthful counterparts -- Webber, Howard and center Terry Davis -- outscoring them, 62-48. Houston shot 47 percent (41-of-88) from the field and won for the ninth time in its last 10 home games.

A free throw by Murray and a 16-footer by Calbert Cheaney sliced the margin to 38-35 with 6:48 remaining in the second quarter before Elie ignited a 13-0 spurt with a pair from the line. Willis, who pulled seven of his 14 rebounds on the offensive glass, capped the surge with a three-point play with 3:49 to go.

Cheaney had 11 points for the Wizards, who committed 14 turnovers -- one less than the Rockets -- but were outrebounded, 47-42. Rod Strickland had 16 assists and scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half in becoming the 25th player in NBA history to record 10,000 points and 5,000 assists in his career.

"Barkley and Kevin Willis did such of good job inside in the first half that we had to double down and give help," Strickland said. "They started getting open looks outside and killed us with three-pointers. They had fresher legs down the stretch. I thought we were going to be able to pull one out."

The Wizards made no headway in the third period and trailed 83-74 after three quarters before working their way back into the game in the fourth period.

Washington trailed by 10 points with 10:46 to play when Murray sank a bucket, Webber dunked and Howard hit 1-of-2 from the line to halve the deficit. Price's three-pointer kept Washington temporarily at bay, but a 15-footer by Murray and another dunk by Webber narrowed the gap to 101-98 with 82 seconds to go.

Elie and Price answered with three-pointers around a pair of free throws by Webber, ending the threat at 107-100 with 38 seconds remaining.

"It's been a while. My shot felt fine in the first half but it was coming up short," Price said. "I got the same looks in the second half. I took my time and they went in."
