GAME RECAP

The Denver Nuggets blew a 10-point lead in the final 1:35, extending their road losing streak to 15 games as Rodney Rogers scored 29 points and the Los Angeles Clippers netted the last 12 for a 105-103 victory.

"We should have won that game, we had it," lamented Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "We played a great 46 1/2 minutes of basketball. "When you have a 10-point lead with 2 1/2 left in the game you have to close it off."

LaPhonso Ellis scored the last of his 20 points with 2:34 to go, giving the Nuggets a 103-93 edge. But Rogers converted on consecutive three-point plays and James Robinson recorded a steal and layup, pulling the Clippers within 103-101 with just over a minute left.

Denver rookie Bobby Jackson shot an air ball and Los Angeles' Lorenzen Wright, who had 15 points and 13 rebounds, pulled down an offensive board and made a follow layup for the tie with 35 seconds left. Wright hit 1-of-2 from the line with 8.8 seconds left and Jackson lost the ball out of bounds after driving the length of the court. Eric Piatkowski hit a free throw with 1.2 seconds left and Denver did not get off a shot on its final possession.

Jackson hit on just 5-of-15 shots and had all but two of his 13 points in the first half.

"This team has a lot of character," Piatkowski said. "Most teams with our record would give up. We're right there in every single game. We lose a tough one last night and we're down 10 with two minutes and our guys did not give up."

Brent Barry scored 22 points for the Clippers, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

The Nuggets shot 52 percent (43-of-82) from the field but still fell on the road for the 29th time in 30 games in suffering their 10th straight loss overall. Denver joins the Dallas Mavericks as the only teams to suffer two double-digit losing streaks this season.

Robinson entered for Darrick Martin with 1:35 left to play and gave the Clippers an immediate lift with his steal and subsequent lay-in 16 seconds later. He finished with 13 points in 14 minutes and added another steal in the final minute which set up Wright's go-ahead free throw.

"It's a tribute to him," Barry said of Robinson. "James did what a professional should do, played with the energy and did exactly what the coach asked him to and more. James Robinson won the game for us tonight."

"It's not a big deal," Robinson said. "People get a chance to see what I'm about, it's nothing spectacular. I just went out and played the way I play. I like the up-tempo style and Denver gave me the opportunity to run with it. I play like Hollywood (his nickname), I ain't bragging, that's just how I play. I'm all out."

Rookies Tony Battie and Eric Washington once again played well in defeat for the Nuggets. Battie scored a season-high with 19 points and added 10 rebounds and Washington hit 8-of-14 from the field and finished with 18 points.

"We basically just handed them the game," Washington conceded. "We were so close and I was the happiest guy. When they picked up the tempo and started picking up their intensity on the defense we just didn't have it."

Barry led the Clippers to a 34-30 lead after one quarter with 15 points, but Denver whittled away and grabbed a 58-53 halftime edge. Barry had all but one of his 22 points in the first half for Los Angeles, which hit just 41 percent (34-of-82) of its shots but drained 10-of-22 three-pointers.

"It's a good win, sometimes Christmas comes late," said Clippers coach Bill Fitch. "If you get a late gift you take it."

The Nuggets fended off Los Angeles and held a single-digit lead until the Clippers forged ahead with a 14-3 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters. Denver jumped ahead with a surge of its own, reeling off 12 straight points to wrest a 97-85 lead with 5:21 remaining.
