GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker scored 12 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter and rookie Chauncey Billups forced a key turnover in the final minute as the Boston Celtics won for the fifth time in six games with a 108-102 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Walker and former Laker Travis Knight had four points apiece as the Celtics broke an 80-80 tie early in the final quarter. After Los Angeles pulled within 95-93 with just over three minutes to go, Walker reeled off six straight points on a pair of free throws, a dunk and a 16-footer to help Boston extend its lead to 104-95 with 1:32 to go.

"This is Antonio Walker's best game, I think," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "I don't remember him taking a bad shot. He had rebounds, assists and he was there defensively. He gave us a big lift."

The Lakers again fought within three points when with about 22 seconds left, Nick Van Exel lost the ball driving the left baseline. Billups, who was shadowing Van Exel, grabbed it and lobbed a baseball pass to rookie Ron Mercer for an easy lay-in.

"I knew he was going to go one-on-one because he is a good one-on-one player," said Phillips. "He's hard to stop because he can stop and shoot the three anytime, so you got to respect that. He's real quick and crafty with the ball. I just tried to stay in front of him.

"At first I wasn't going to pass it because I didn't want to throw it away," continued Billups, who committed six of Boston's 12 turnovers. "Then I saw that he (Mercer) had a couple of steps on Kobe (Bryant) so I threw it up. With the game on the line I knew he was goiing to get it."

Walter McCarty scored 19 points and Billups finished with 16 and eight assists for the Celtics (14-13), who moved within one win of matching their win total for all of last season.

"It's a stepping stone for us, we are rebuilding this organization and we're getting better," said Walker. "Something we're trying to do is rebuild this rivalry. We both got young guys, hopefully we can do that."

Former Celtic Rick Fox had 27 points and nine rebounds and Van Exel and Bryant finished with 17 points apiece for Los Angeles, who had a four-game winning streak snapped and lost at home to Boston for the first time since March 17th, 1995. Elden Campbell added 18 points and nine rebounds as the Lakers hit 48 percent (41-of-86) of their shots but just 2-of-12 from behind the arc.

" I don't care who we're playing, we could be playing five little children, but we have to get up," Bryant said disgustedly. "There's no way on earth they should beat us."

The Lakers started strong and took their biggest lead, 24-18, late in the opening quarter before the Celtics closed the period on a 6-2 run. Fox, who had 18 points in his first game against his old team in the Lakers' November win, led with 11 points in the quarter.

Boston jumped out front in the second quarter and built a 50-44 halftime advantage as McCarty carried the scoring load with 15 first-half points for the Celtics, who shot 45 percent (40-of-88) from the field overall.

Knight scored 14 points off the bench and Mercer added nine for the Celtics, who moved over .500 for the first time this month and improved to 4-7 on the road. Walker added 13 boards for the Celtics, who were outscored 70-44 in the paint.

The Lakers led briefly in the second half after Bryant's lay-in with 3:19 left in the third quarter gave them a 68-67 edge. The Celtics appeared to have control late in the fourth when McCarty capped a 9-2 run with a baseline three-pointer as the shot clock expired, putting Boston ahead 104-95 with 1:32 to go.

Van Exel hit a jumper and two free throws and Eddie Jones managed a steal and a lay-in to pull the Lakers within three points with 35 seconds left before Mercer's dunk slammed the door.

"It hurts," admitted Jones. Not because of the rivalry. But because they probably won't even make the playoffs and we're one of the best teams in the league and we let this team beat us, that's what hurts."
