GAME RECAP

Alonzo Mourning had 22 points and 13 rebounds and the Miami Heat used a barrage of three-pointers to cool off the Indiana Pacers, 101-90, for their fourth win in five games.

Tim Hardaway added 21 points and 10 assists for the Heat, who shot 9-of-19 from three-point range and beat the Pacers for the first time in three tries this season. Miami (19-9), which is in first place in the Atlantic Division, tied the Chicago Bulls for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Reggie Miller scored 19 points and Antonio Davis added 15 and 12 rebounds for Indiana, which had won seven of its last eight games but wasted a chance to tie Chicago atop the Central Division. The Pacers were just 2-of-11 from behind the arc.

There were five technical fouls and a flagrant foul called as bad blood carried over from Indiana's two home wins against Miami earlier in the season, when Miller did some trash-talking. In the closing seconds, Mourning blocked Miller's shot and taunted him, earning a technical foul.

"We're two emotional teams that get after each other," said Heat coach Pat Riley, who also received a technical. "They beat us twice up there and enjoyed it thoroughly. There's going to be emotion. You can be physical but you've got to keep your head. There's going to be some technicals, but you have to keep playing hard."

"Things didn't get too bad until there were 30 seconds left," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "I guess that's the way some teams do it."

Consecutive three-pointers by Dan Majerle and Voshon Lenard closed the third quarter and gave Miami a 77-69 advantage. A three-pointer by Eric Murdock capped a 10-5 run that opened the final period and extended the lead to 87-74 with 7:38 left.

Miami went cold and Indiana fought back, pulling within 93-89 with 1:56 to play when Dale Davis converted an alley-oop pass from Mark Jackson, who had nine assists.

But Mourning scored inside 17 seconds later, and P.J. Brown, who had 18 points, added a basket with a minute to go. Hardaway's two free throws rebuilt the lead to 99-89 with 45 seconds to go.

"There's going to be a time in the game, third quarter or whatever it is, when one team is going to break it wide open," Riley said. "That's what happened up there twice. Tonight we got a run and closed it our pretty good."

Mourning's incident with Miller came with nine seconds left, and he remembered the losses in Indianapolis, which he sat out with a knee injury.

"I saw every bit of it," Mourning said. "He'd run by the bench, shoot a jumper and say something. It was uncalled for. It wasn't about payback, it was about trying to get a win. We remembered that."

"All that matters is we got the win," Hardaway said. "Did you all listen to the song, 'Big Payback'? We did the same thing to him tonight."

Majerle scored 12 points and Lenard added nine for the Heat, who shot 54 percent (39-of-72) from the field and held a 38-34 edge on the glass. Mourning was 10-of-12 from the field.

"It was a collective effort," Mourning said. "We made shots down the stretch, we made plays down the stretch."

Dale Davis and Chris Mullin scored 11 points apiece for the Pacers, who shot just 41 percent (26-of-64) but made 36-of-41 free throws. Center Rik Smits was limited by foul trouble to eight points in 22 minutes.

"It seems like we got away from the things we do well and that's our inside game," Smits said. "There were too many times when we tried to run up and down the court. That's when we got in trouble."

Mourning and Majerle scored eight points apiece in the opening quarter, which ended with Indiana holding a 20-18 lead. Eight second-quarter points from Hardaway allowed Miami to take a 49-45 halftime advantage.

Mourning scored seven points in the third quarter.
