GAME RECAP

Grant Hill scored 29 points and Jerry Stackhouse and Joe Dumars added 24 each to lead the Detroit Pistons to their ninth victory in 10 meetings with the Toronto Raptors, 100-95.

With Lindsey Hunter going on the injured list with a strained right calf, Stackhouse started for the first time in the six games he has played since being acquired from Philadelphia. Dumars scored 18 of his season-high points in the second half and tied a season-best with seven assists. Brian Williams had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Pistons.

"I felt a lot more comfortable starting versus coming off the bench," Stackhouse said. "Offensively we did O.K. But defensively we missed Lindsey on the ball pressure and leadership."

"I have a sense that Joe Dumars is going to have a great last 50 games," Detroit coach Doug Collins said. "Joe did what we asked him to do. I thought Jerry was more comfortable. He only shot 5-of-19 but he hit a huge three for us. He got to the line and was 13-of-14."

Damon Stoudamire tied a career-high with 36 points and broke his own club record with seven three-pointers for Toronto. He added nine rebounds and eight assists. Stoudamire also had 36 points on December 19th against Milwaukee.

"Stoudamire had a career night," Stackhouse said. "We couldn't contain him but his shooting took his teammates out of the game."

The Raptors raced to a 27-12 lead just over eight minutes into the game en route to a 34-20 advantage after one quarter.

"We got off to a slow start and that was my fault," Collins said. "I started a big lineup against that team and a big lineup won't work, so we dug ourselves a hole. We fought out of it. I think our guys were excited about the fact that we fought back and got the win."

Detroit answered with a 25-10 burst to start the second quarter to knot the contest at 37-37 with 2:17 remaining. Hill had nine points and Stackhouse added six points during the run. The Pistons limited the Raptors to 12 points on 2-of-13 shooting in the quarter.

"As a team we have to get mentally tough coming down the stretch," Stoudamire said. "We have to start weathering the storms when teams turn it up a notch on us. We didn't do that tonight. We started off strong, but every NBA team is going to make a run. The game is 48 minutes, not 12."

Detroit took the lead for good at 51-50 on a layup by Grant Long 2:51 into the third quarter. The Pistons led by 12 points three times, the last at 87-75 with 5:23 left on a layup by Hill.

Toronto went on a 15-7 spurt capped by Doug Christie's steal of an inbounds pass from Hill and subsequent dunk to close to 94-92 with 33 seconds left. Stoudamire scored seven of his 13 fourth-quarter points during that stretch.

Christie and Reggie Slater scored 14 points each for the Raptors and Oliver Miller added 12 and 11 rebounds.

Dumars hit a pair of free throws and Stackhouse capitalized on Shawn Respert's mishandling of the ball to give Detroit a 98-92 advantage with 23 seconds to go.

Respert was 1-for-7 from the field and forward John Wallace misfired on all six of his shots.

"Our guys had open looks tonight and we couldn't knock them down," Raptors coach Darrell Walker said. "John Wallace didn't make any shots. Shawn Respert didn't make any shots. They had wide-open shots and they didn't made any. That's the way in goes. Some nights they make them and some nights they don't."

The Raptors, who dropped to 2-13 on the road, have lost six of eight since snapping their 17-game losing streak. Their lone win against Detroit came on March 19th of last season.

Toronto forward Marcus Camby left the game in the first quarter with a strained rib cage muscle and did not return. He had two points in nine minutes.
