GAME RECAP

Reggie Miller scored 10 of his 23 points in the third quarter as the hot-shooting Indiana Pacers extended their home winning streak to nine games with a 109-91 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Chris Mullin also scored 23 points and Rik Smits added 20 and 13 rebounds for the Pacers, who shot 61 percent (47-of-77) from the field, including a blistering 78 percent (14-of-18) in the third quarter, when they turned a three-point halftime lead into an 83-66 bulge.

"The second half, we played some of the best defense we've had in a long time," Pacers coach Larry Bird said.

Miller scored four points in a 6-0 burst that began the period, then added six more in a 14-5 spurt that closed the quarter. He shot 4-of-5 and added two free throws.

Indiana never trailed, had 40 assists and shot better than 60 percent for the second straight game at Market Square Arena, where it improved to 11-3. The Pacers have not lost at home since November 12th against Atlanta.

"This is a big win at home because we must take care of our home court," Mullin said. "We are a very unselfish basketball team. We believe in ourselves, we believe in our veterans and our youngsters. We will continue to get better."

"We are very deep and it showed again tonight," said Pacers guard Mark Jackson, who had 11 assists. "We have focused on winning on our home court. By doing this, people will not even want to come into our arena to play."

Sam Cassell had 18 points and nine assists and rookie Keith Van Horn added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Nets, who had a two-game winning streak snapped and have lost six of seven on the road. The teams were meeting for the first time since Opening Night, when New Jersey ruined Indiana coach Larry Bird's debut with a 97-95 win.

"They are the best team we played so far," said Nets coach John Calipari, who picked up a technical foul in the first quarter. "They had the least trouble with our press of anybody we've played so far. They are a veteran team and they can shoot."

"The big difference was Chris Mullin," Van Horn said. "He struggled the first time we played and tonight he came out and lit it up."

Mullin scored six points and Miller four as the Pacers scored the first nine points and raced to a 12-2 lead. A jumper by Smits extended the advantage to 25-13 with 3:22 to play in the first quarter before the Nets closed the period with a 12-2 run, fueled by seven points from Cassell.

A three-point play by Kendall Gill pulled New Jersey into a 37-37 tie with 4:54 remaining in the second quarter, but Mullin responded with a three-pointer to give Indiana the lead for good. Another three-pointer by Mark Jackson extended the lead to 49-42 with 2:08 left, but Cassell's runner cut the deficit to 51-48 at halftime.

Miller had a pair of fast-break layups in the burst that opened the third quarter and gave Indiana a 57-48 lead. David Benoit's three-pointer pulled New Jersey within 69-61 with 5:03 remaining but Indiana surged again behind Miller, whose 20-footer with 15 seconds left extended the lead to 17 points.

"We got off to a great start and continued to play that way throughout the game," Jackson said. "New Jersey is young and dangerous and we respect them, but we took care of business tonight."

The Pacers opened their largest lead at 107-84 on a layup by Travis Best with 2:40 to play.

Antonio Davis scored 12 points, Jalen Rose added 10 and Jackson handed out 11 assists for Indiana, which barely missed forward Antonio Davis, who suffered a sprained left ankle in the opening minute and did not return.

Sherman Douglas scored 15 points and Jayson Williams added 14 for the Nets, who shot under 40 percent (32-of-81) and were outrebounded, 40-39.

"The difference was four games in five nights," said Williams, who was limited to seven rebounds. "And this one was against one of the best in the East. Mullin was on fire and Jackson played well."
