GAME RECAP

Elden Campbell scored six of his 23 points in the third quarter and also grabbed nine rebounds and Eddie Jones added 17 points as the Los Angeles Lakers notched their fifth win in six games with a 93-80 victory over the Sacramento Kings.

Rick Fox had 12 points and Nick Van Exel contributed eight and 11 assists for the Lakers, who have won eight of their last 10 games and remained one game behind first-place Seattle in the Pacific Division. Los Angeles has won eight straight meetings with Sacramento.

"We had some bright spots out there, we did a good job defensively," Lakers coach Del Harris said. "Eddie Jones did a good job all night with Mitch Richmond, who is a very tough assigment. I thought Elden established the inside game for us. Overall, we kept them from doing some of the cute things they do very well on offense in most of their games."

Rookie Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored a season-high 19 points in his second career start and Mitch Richmond was limited to 15 on 4-for-18 from the field for Sacramento, which has lost 13 of 15 road contests this season.

"I thought we gave ourselves a chance to win the game but we had a lot of open shots that did not fall," Kings coach Eddie Jordan said. "I felt we were patient and aggressive at the same time but that's the only way you can play against this team."

Richmond failed to lead the Kings in scoring for the first time in five games.

"I just wasn't finding the basket tonight," Richmond said. "I had some nice looks. I think I rushed some early and I couldn't get into a rhythm after that."

The Kings fell behind 79-67 with 9:13 remaining before using an 8-2 spurt, capped by Mark Hendrickson's jumper, to close within 81-75 with 5:21 to play. But Campbell hit a layup and Jones scored the next four points, extending the lead to 12 points with 3:20 left.

"We played bad, we're not playing Lakers basketball, we need to jump these teams early and give them no breathing room," said Kobe Bryant, who had 12 points off the bench. "We need to suffocate them. I think that our competitiveness has to rise a little bit. We've been taking it for granted that in the fourth quarter the other team is going to make a mistake or one of us is going to get hot. We can't do that."

Rick Fox scored 12 points off the bench for the Lakers, who at 23-7 matched the team's best start since the 1989-90 team also began 23-7. They are 15-7 without star center Shaquille O'Neal, who is out with an abdominal injury and fractured wrist.

"We keep giving other teams confidence in the fourth quarter, letting them think they can play with us," Jones said. "Everybody needs to go out and get their confidence before the big guy (O'Neal) even comes back. I don't know if this is a letdown, I just think we're playing down to the level of our competition. We have to get that killer instinct."

The Kings jumped out to a 11-2 lead in the game's first three minutes but the Lakers responded with a 13-6 run to pull within 17-15 with six minutes left in the quarter. The Lakers held a 31-26 edge after the opening quarter and did not trail the rest of the way. Campbell scored nine points in the first quarter.

Rookie Anthony Johnson had 11 points and five assists and Olden Polynice added eight and 13 boards for the Kings, who shot 38 percent (32-for-84) from the field and 2-for-14 from three-point range.
