GAME RECAP

Gary Payton recorded his fifth career triple-double and Vin Baker scored seven points in the decisive third-quarter run, leading the Seattle SuperSonics to their 11th straight victory over the Golden State Warriors, 101-87.

Payton hit 9-of-12 shots and finished with 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for his first triple-double since March 18th of last season.

"I am just thinking about winning a championship," Payton said. "I have got a nice team here that could win a championship."

After Golden State's Erick Dampier forged a 68-68 tie with 6:09 remaining in the third quarter of a see-saw battle, Hersey Hawkins sank an 18-footer, igniting a 14-2 burst which gave Seattle the lead for good and featured seven points from Baker and five from Payton.

"I struggled in the first half, I wanted to come out in the second half and be more aggressive," Baker said. "I was fortunate that my teammmates found me for some easy buckets.

"Gary did a great job, he found Dale (Ellis) quite a bit," added Baker. "He (Payton) just imposes his will on opposing point guards."

Baker scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and Ellis added 21 for Seattle, which has won five straight road games and nine of 10 overall.

"Gary was spectacular tonight and Dale Ellis continues to give us a huge lift," said Seattle coach George Karl. "You can't complain, we are 24-6 with a lot of road games. I think the most in the league."

Joe Smith netted 23 points and dished out 12 assists and Donyell Marshall 18 as Golden State lost for the fifth time in seven games. The Warriors have not beaten Seattle since March 6th, 1995.

Brian Shaw scored 10 points and Smith six as the Warriors shot 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field and led 30-27 after one period.

Seattle took a 31-30 advantage on a driving layup by Payton early in the second quarter and built its lead as high as six points before settling for a 57-55 halftime edge.

Ellis had 11 points in the second quarter and 16 at the break for the Sonics, who hit 51 percent (22-of-43) of their shots over the first 24 minutes.

The Warriors were even hotter from the field, shooting at a 57 percent (25-of-44) clip and outrebounding Seattle 21-16.

Baker got hot and led the Sonics on a 7-0 run to start the third period, scoring the last five points of the burst with two dunks and a free throw. Golden State answered with a 13-4 surge of its own to force the deadlock.

The Sonics decided the issue with a 16-6 run that ended the third quarter and gave them a 84-74 lead. Baker had 12 points and three of his five rebounds in the quarter.

The Warriors' Tony Delk cut the deficit to eight points early in the fourth period, but Sam Perkins drilled a three-pointer and Payton slipped through the lane for a lay-in and Seattle went on to build a 19-point lead.

"It is pretty lopsided," said Shaw of the Warriors' skid against Seattle. "They adjusted and we didn't adjust to their adjustments. They have a lot of weapons, when we made runs at them they didn't panic, they kept their composure. Their runs lasted longer than ours."

Detlef Schrempf had 14 points and six assists and Perkins added seven points off the bench for Seattle, which shot 48 percent (39-of-81) from the floor. Ellis drained 4-of-5 from three-point range and the Sonics hit 9-of-19 from behind the arc.
