GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored a season-high 42 points, including a three-pointer at the end of regulation, and the Charlotte Hornets went on to a 99-88 overtime victory over the Miami Heat.

After Vlade Divac missed a long three-pointer, Rice wrestled the rebound away from Miami's Tim Hardaway. Divac's shot did not hit the basket but officials ruled that Hardaway had the rebound and Rice stole it. Charlotte inbounded with 1.6 seconds remaining and Rice hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it 84-84.

"The play at the end of regulation was designed for me to come off a screen," Rice said. "I guess I was in the zone. We figured they'd be very aggressive and we stepped it up on the defensive end. If we go out and play like we played tonight, we should do very well. It was a great team effort, we played very aggressively."

Hardaway opened the overtime with a jumper to give Miami an 86-84 lead but Anthony Mason answered with a basket to ignite a 10-0 burst. Rice followed with a pair of shots and Mason made two free throws to cap the run for a 94-86 advantage with 38.8 seconds to go.

"It was a tough loss for us tonight," said Miami coach Pat Riley. "We worked hard and long. We did everything we could and then get to the end, a couple of bizarre things happen, and we lose. We couldn't stop Glen at all tonight, second half especially. He is a great player and shooter and once he gets airborne, you can't stop him. Glen hit some really tough shots tonight."

Rice connected on 14-of-23 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, and was 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Mason had 19 points and 14 points and B.J. Armstrong added 11 points for the Hornets, who defeated the Heat for the third time in as many meetings this season.

"Tonight was of those we pulled out from the jaws of defeat," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "The referees made the right call (regarding the possession after Divac's shot). Glen was just awesome tonight, he carried us on his back. Mase was a monster under the boards. We played well the whole game, but Hardaway hit some big shots. He delivered for them and Glen delivered for us."

Hardaway had 23 points and 10 assists and Alonzo Mourning added 20 points for the Heat, who had their three-game winning streak stopped but are three games ahead of second-place New York and New Jersey in the Atlantic Division. P.J. Brown recorded 12 points and 16 rebounds for Miami, which has also lost its last three games at Charlotte.

"Regardless of what happened tonight, we did not finish the game," Mourning said. "I thought we had it in regulation but I guess not. We came in with good intentions tonight, however, it all came to an end in the last few seconds of regulation."

Armstrong, who also had eight assists off the bench, hit a jumper to give the Heat a 71-64 lead with 9:49 remaining in the fourth. Hardaway had six points as the Heat responded with a 14-3 run, capped by Eric Murdock's three-pointer, for a 78-77 edge with 3:07 left.

Rice hit a free throw to tie the score at 78 with 2:51 to go in the fourth, but Brown and Hardaway answered with consecutive baskets to give the Heat an 82-78 cushion with 1:57 left. Dell Curry, who shot just 2-for-8, sank a three-pointer to pull the Hornets within 82-81 with 64 seconds remaining. Mourning made a pair of free throws with 26.6 seconds left to make it 84-81.
