GAME RECAP

Shawn Kemp scored 17 points and Wesley Person and Danny Ferry hit key three-pointers in the final five minutes as the Cleveland Cavaliers pulled away for an 81-71 victory over the fading Orlando Magic.

Cleveland led by three points at halftime and built a 61-54 cushion after three quarters, but Orlando rallied in the fourth. A basket by Horace Grant pulled the Magic within 69-68 midway through the final period before Person drained a three-pointer to turn back Orlando's first rush.

Gerald Wilkins, who came off the bench and scored six points in the final period for the Magic, narrowed the gap to 74-71 with a layup with three minutes to play. But Ferry, who led Cleveland with eight points in the first half and finished with 13, hit a three-pointer to give the Cavs some breathing room.

"Things did not come easy. My three came in transition," said Ferry. "They weren't giving anything up too easy tonight."

Zydrunas Ilgauskas put Cleveland ahead for good with 3:14 left in the first half. He stole the ball from Darrell Armstrong and drained a 13-footer, giving the Cavs a 34-33 edge with 3:14 left.

Grant netted 17 points and Brian Evans had 16 for Orlando, which lost for the seventh time in eight games. Rony Seikaly had just nine points on 3-of-6 shooting before leaving with a sprained right foot midway through the third quarter.

"I'm just going to try and keep it going and have a couple of good nights where I got my confidence going," said Evans. "I feel like I can do some things to help the team."

Ilgauskas finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Kemp and Ferry pulled down nine boards apiece for the Cavaliers, who hit just 39 percent (30-of-79) of their shots but used a commanding 50-36 edge on the backboards to snap a two-game losing streak. Cleveland scored 23 points via follow shots, compared to just eight for the Magic.

Rookie Derek Anderson hit 9-of-12 from the line and finished with 13 points for the Cavs, who had lost five of their last seven games. Person finished with 10 points and Vitaly Potapenko came off the bench for 10 and six rebounds -- all on the offensive glass -- in just 16 minutes.

The Magic jumped out to the early lead, scoring eight of the game's first 10 points en route to a 20-19 advantage after the opening quarter. Orlando scored only 17 points in each of the next three quarters, finishing below 80 for the second straight game and the fourth in its last eight contests.

"We probably have caught some teams by surprise, but Mike Fratello has always been a defensive head coach," Kemp said. "Our defense is first and our offense is second. If you play good defense in the NBA, most times you'll have a good chance of winning games."

Mark Price had nine of his 11 points in the first half for the Magic, who had won four of their last six meetings with the Cavaliers in Orlando.

"We're struggling to put points on the board," Price said. "There aren't a lot of options right now to do different things."
