GAME RECAP

Brian Williams scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Joe Dumars added 23 points and eight assists as the Detroit Pistons held off the Raptors for the second time in four days, 91-88, remaining unbeaten in Toronto.

Oliver Miller's game-tying three-point attempt grazed the front of the rim and Detroit grabbed the rebound, claiming its 10th win in 11 tries all-time against the Raptors. Damon Stoudamire took the inbounds pass from Doug Christie near the top of the key and appeared to have an open three-pointer but handed it to Miller instead.

"That last play, I'm mad at myself," said Stoudamire, who finished with just 11 points, more than seven less than his average. "It was designed to be a quick two-pointer. When I stepped inside the three-point line, I passed it to O (Miller), but he thought there was less time than there was. He could have passed it back to me for the three, but he took the shot. I don't blame him. That wasn't the play."

"I feel good about the guys competing and playing hard," said Toronto coach Darrell Walker. "Damon can't get 30 points every night."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 20 points for the Pistons and hit three free throws in the final 16 seconds, the last of which capped the scoring with nine seconds to play. Toronto's Reggie Slater hit a layup before Stackhouse's final free throw cut the deficit to 89-88 with nine seconds left.

"We were very fortunate tonight," said Detroit coach Doug Collins. "Toronto made a big run on us. Stack (Stackhouse) made some big free throws when we needed them."

Grant Hill kept the door open for the Raptors, missing a jumper with 23 seconds remaining, but Dumars grabbed an offensive rebound, forcing Toronto to foul.

"Joe was fanatasitc," said Collins. "He got a big offensive rebound when we needed it."

Shawn Respert had 16 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench and tied the game, 82-82, with a long jumper with 3:25 to play. He added a pair of free throws with 41 seconds left to cut the deficit to 88-86.

Respert also hit two three-pointers in an 11-2 run to get the Raptors within 77-74 with 9:33 to play. Zan Tabak, who finished with seven points and six rebounds off the bench, capped the run with a three-point play with 9:33 remaining.

Following a pair of free throws by Stackhouse that gave Detroit its biggest lead, 75-63, Respert hit a three-pointer with five-tenths of a second left in the third quarter to make the score 75-66. Respert then drained another three-pointer, cutting the deficit to 75-69 just 40 seconds into the fourth.

The Raptors' reserves outscored the Pistons' bench, 32-6.

Hill finished with 11 points, 10 assists and five rebounds, but went 4-of-14 from the field for Detroit, which defeated Toronto, 100-95, on Tuesday and has won all three meetings this season.

Christie shot 8-of-20 from the field and scored 19 of his 23 points in the first half while grabbing eight rebounds for the Raptors, who have the worst record in the Eastern Conference at 4-27. Stoudamire shot 5-of-17 from the field and had a season-high 16 assists for Toronto, which has suffered 12 of its losses by five points or less.

"We adjusted our defense on Christie after the first half," said Collins. "Our defense on Stoudamire was the key. This has been the story of their season. They've lost a lot of close games."

"Damon is very hard to contain, but I think Joe and myself did a great job on him," said Stackhouse. "These were must-win games against Toronto, and we stepped up to win them both."
