GAME RECAP

Rick Smits scored 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had four blocks and Reggie Miller added 16 points and six rebounds as the red-hot Indiana Pacers became the first opponent to win at the MCI Center, cruising past the Washington Wizards, 99-81.

Indiana's Travis Best scored eight of his 12 points in the second quarter, including four during a 12-1 run that opened up a 45-27 lead with 4:42 left in the first half. The Pacers extended the bulge to 50-30 with 3:21 left in the second on a three-pointer by Miller and maintained at least a 10-point lead throughout.

"We made things happen," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "I'm happy with the guys tonight. If we come every night and play focused like tonight, we'll win. Our defense was sharper and we had some big plays to extend the lead."

Mark Jackson chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists and gave Indiana a 97-78 advantage with a pair of free throws with 2:33 remaining. The Pacers, who led by as many as 21 points in the third period, won for the ninth time in their last 11 games.

"I think we're pretty dangerous right now," said Jackson. "We're pretty focused. We believe, and we just go out and do it."

Chris Webber scored 21 points and had seven rebounds and Juwan Howard added 19 and eight for Washington, which fell to 8-1 at its new home after christening it on December 2nd with a 95-78 victory over Seattle. The Wizards got to within 86-76 on a dunk by Webber with 5:53 to play.

"We were consistently bad tonight," said Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff, whose team was booed throughout the second half. "From the inception to the end, we did not play well, and that sums it up.

"This was very disppointing to me. They have really played well here at MCI. To get booed like that, I think they deserve better."

Rod Strickland scored 12 points but had just three assists with seven turnovers and Tracy Murray added 10 points for the Wizards, who shot 36 percent from the field. Terry Davis grabbed 12 rebounds for Washington, which has dropped three of its last four games after winning six straight.

"You aren't always going to play well," said Strickland. "Tonight, we didn't have it. Honestly, I don't even know what to say. ... It's kind of disappointing to hear the boos, but you just move on."

Best and Chris Mullin had seven assists each for Indiana, which improved to 2-0 against the Wizards this season. The Pacers defeated Washington, 109-92 in Indianapolis on December 13th and have claimed 10 of the last 14 games in the series.

"We wanted to make a statement with this team being undefeated in this building," said Miller. "We wanted to come in and create a tempo to our liking. We wanted to dominate and give them their first loss here."
