GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds in his return to the lineup, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 116-106 victory over the banged-up, fading Atlanta Hawks.

O'Neal, who missed the last 20 games due to an abdominal strain and hairline fracture of his right wrist, shot 10-of-14 from the field with seven dunks. He did not start for only the third time in 355 NBA games, but played 24 minutes and was on the floor to spark a fourth-quarter run that put the game out of reach.

"I've been sitting out for five weeks and I wanted to come in and bring some excitement back to the arena," O'Neal said. "I just wanted to come out and play well. I said to myself I had to get 20 (points) and 10 (rebounds).

Eddie Jones led the Lakers with 23 points, including 15 in the third quarter. Nick Van Exel added 22 points and 13 assists for Los Angeles, which defeated Atlanta for the ninth straight time at home.

Christian Laettner scored 22 points and Steve Smith added 21 for the Hawks, who suffered their sixth straight loss. Atlanta is just 8-11 since an 11-0 start.

The Hawks, who have not beaten the Lakers in Los Angeles since March 19th, 1989, lost starters Mookie Blaylock and Dikembe Mutombo. Blaylock played just five minutes before aggravating a strained groin, while Mutombo sat out the fourth quarter with a strained right knee.

"They're quick and they have great talent, but when things go wrong we just can't fall apart," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "Mookie goes out of the game and it's like we fall apart."

The Lakers fed off O'Neal's return to race to a double-digit lead in the first half. Los Angeles used a 17-6 spurt spanning the first and second quarters that turned a 15-15 tie into a 32-21 lead after Derek Fisher's layup with 10:42 remaining in the half.

Los Angeles led 59-44 at halftime as Elden Campbell scored all 15 of his points and O'Neal added 10 in just 10 minutes.

"Obviously it was good to have the big man back," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "I thought that the whole team came out with energy tonight. Shaquille added to that."

"When they got the big guy back, it brought a lot of joy and encouragement to the team," Mutombo said. "It motivated them mentally because they were so happy to have Shaq back."

The Lakers kept pouring it on in the third, opening the period with an 11-2 burst. Jones' three-pointer capped it and gave Los Angeles its largest lead, 70-46. But the Hawks began chipping away and got within 90-77 entering the final period.

Atlanta began the fourth with a 12-4 run to cut Los Angeles' lead to 94-89 on a jumper by rookie Ed Gray with 7:45 to play. But O'Neal, who was expected to play about 20 minutes, knocked down an eight-footer to ignite a 10-1 burst. His three-point play with 5:39 to play capped it and provided the Lakers with a 104-90 cushion. The Hawks got not closer than seven points thereafter.

Kobe Bryant finished with 12 points for the Lakers, who shot 51 percent (48-of-94) from the field. Los Angeles improved to 9-0 with O'Neal in the lineup. The Lakers came into the game averaging 113 points with O'Neal and just 102.4 without him, when they are 15-7.

Gray matched his season high with 20 points and Alan Henderson added 13 for the Hawks, who shot 45 percent (41-of-92).
