GAME RECAP

Mitch Richmond scored 23 points and Olden Polynice added 15 off the bench as the Sacramento Kings handed Vancouver its fifth straight loss, 94-80, remaining perfect at home against the Grizzlies.

Richmond past Tiny Archibald and former Golden State teammate Chris Mullin into 54th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 16,504 points on a free throw, which gave the Kings a 90-76 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Polynice added 12 rebounds and scored eight points during an 18-5 run that gave Sacramento a 52-32 bulge with 1:40 left in the first half. The Kings avenged a 97-96 loss in Vancouver on opening night and improved to 7-3 all-time against the Grizzlies, including a 5-0 mark at home.

"Our bench played very well, and we've been waiting for that," said Sacramento coach Eddie Jordan. "We've been giving them the opportunity. ... It's been a struggle for them but they were big tonight."

Richmond scored eight points during a 15-4 run that erased a three-point deficit and gave the Kings a 27-19 lead late in the first quarter. Rookie Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored 13 points in a rare starting role, including five during the first-quarter spurt.

"We ran our offense very well in the first half," said Richmond. "The second half kind of got a little stagnant, and they made a run on us. But overall, we put together a game and got four quarters where we played well."

Abdul-Wahad started his second consecutive game since Corliss Williamson's altercation with Philadelphia's Derrick Coleman on Sunday. Williamson is serving a three-game suspension.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 30 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field and 10-of-10 from the free throw line and added seven rebounds for Vancouver, which has dropped eight of its last nine games and five in a row on the road. The Grizzlies are 2-14 away from home this season.

"I've got to take full responsibilty," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill. "It's my basketball team, and we are not playing the way we should. Obviously, I am not doing a good enough job getting these guys prepared, and the results are not showing up."

Abdur-Rahim scored 16 points in the first quarter and added 10 in the third, all during an 18-4 run that closed the deficit to 67-55 with 1:02 to play in the quarter. Vancouver moved within 82-71 on George Lynch's free throw with 6:47 left but could not get any closer.

"I would rather have sacrificed those points and won the game," said Rahim. "When we came back, we just started playing hard. We just couldn't sustain it. If we could have sustained it, we could have made a serious run at it."

Otis Thorpe had 12 points and six rebounds and Bryant Reeves added six and 13 for the Grizzlies, who scored just 10 points in the second quarter, the fewest allowed by Sacramento in a period this season.

Bobby Hurley made a valuable contribution off the Sacramento bench, matching season highs with 11 points and seven assists for the Kings, who led by as many as 26 points on Billy Owens' hook with 7:54 left in the third period. Owens finished with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists.

"I was able to come in right away and knock down some shots," said Hurley, who was 2-of-4 from three-point range. "That really helps when you are coming off the bench to do something positive when you first come in. You want to come in and establish something so you can get a chance to play some in the second half."

The Kings bench totaled 40 points and 21 rebounds and received extended minutes from Mark Hendrickson, who added eight points in his third game with the team.

"The bench came in and played well," said Richmond. "Bobby played a great game hitting threes. It was his great night tonight ... O.P. (Polynice) played well, and he was a spark off the bench. Him and Bobby Hurley and also ... what's the new guy's name? Yeah, Hendricskon. Mark Henderson (Hendrickson) did some good things."
