GAME RECAP

Gary Payton, Detlef Schrempf and Hersey Hawkins each scored 11 of their 22 points in a season-high third quarter as the Seattle SuperSonics extended a pair of winning streaks with a 120-108 victory over the reeling Vancouver Grizzlies.

Vin Baker scored 30 points on 12-of-16 shooting for the red-hot SuperSonics, who overcame their worst defensive half of the season with a 43-point third period, their biggest quarter of the campaign. Seattle shot 79 percent (15-of-19) from the field and held Vancouver to 40 percent (8-of-20) and 20 points in the period.

"We did the same thing we did in the first half. We just did it a little bit better, said Payton. "We rotated, we got steals, we ran hard and didn't fumble the ball on the fast breaks. We converted all of our shots in the second half so it was real good for us. "

Seattle made its first 12 three-pointers before Payton missed in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and settled for 13-of-16 from behind the arc. It has won five in a row overall and six straight on the road, where it is 13-4 this season.

"We played good. Fortunately, we woke up in the third quarter and the 14 minutes we played were maybe as good as we've played all year long," said Seattle coach George Karl. "I mean we were great defensively and very good offensively. It made one of the games that I thought was going to be very difficult, very easy."

The Sonics eclipsed their previous season high of 119 against Denver on December 18th. They have scored at least 100 points in 11 of their last 12 games, going 11-1 during that span.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Sam Mack scored 21 points apiece for the Grizzlies, who had the third-highest point total this season against the defensive-minded Sonics but nevertheless lost their sixth straight game.

Mack scored 15 points and Abdur-Rahim 12 as Vancouver opened a 65-56 halftime lead. It was the most points allowed by Seattle in a half this season, surpassing the 60 surrendered to Golden State on December 20th.

A tip-in by Bryant Reeves, who scored just six points, gave the Grizzlies their largest lead at 68-57 with 10:57 to play in the third quarter. But the Sonics responded with a 22-4 spurt that included four three-pointers. Hawkins had two three-pointers and seven points in the run, which was capped at 80-73 by a layup by Schrempf with 6:12 left.

"Obviously, the turning point was a 33-20 third quarter," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill. "That is not going to get it done and win any basketball games. They shot the ball really well. We tried to double Vin Baker and we didn't get the rotation and get a hand out on the shooter. But they made all the shots, no matter what. I think the credit has to go to them, that's why they are the best team in the NBA."

Led by Schrempf, Payton and Hawkins, the Sonics took a 99-85 lead to the fourth quarter and opened their largest advantage at 113-93 with 5:33 remaining on a jumper by Dale Ellis, who scored 11 points.

Payton handed out nine assists and Schrempf eight for Seattle, which shot 59 percent (44-of-75) from the field. The Sonics were outrebounded, 43-30.

George Lynch scored 17 points and Pete Chilcutt grabbed 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 53 percent (44-of-83) but made just 15-of-29 free throws.

"In the first quarter they weren't making the shots they hit in the third (quarter)," said Mack. "Gary (Payton), Hersey (Hawkins), were hitting everything and then Detlef (Schrempf) found his place on the baseline and stayed there and that was a big key."
