GAME RECAP

Juwan Howard scored 29 points and Rod Strickland added 26, 11 assists and nine rebounds as the Washington Wizards' Bernie Bickerstaff collected his 300th career coaching win with a 109-99 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Chris Webber chipped in 22 points for Washington, which had lost three of its last four games. The Wizards, who scored the first 12 points of the game, rebounded from their first loss at the MCI Center, improving to 9-1 at the new building.

"We controlled the game from start to finish," said Howard. "We pounded on the inside. When we had opportunities, we took advantage of it. We gave a poor effort on Friday. Tonight we made an effort to control the game from start to finish and we did that."

Bickerstaff, in his ninth year as an NBA coach and first full season in Washington, owns a 300-306 career record.

Rex Chapman, who played for Washington from 1992-95, scored a season-high 33 points for Phoenix, which had won two straight and six of its last seven contests. The Suns have dropped consecutive meetings with Washington for the first time since losing five in a row from January 23rd, 1986 to March 9th, 1988.

Strickland and Calbert Cheaney netted four points apiece as the Wizards jumped out to a 12-0 lead and held Phoenix scoreless for the first 3:35. Strickland and Howard each scored eight points after 12 minutes to offset Chapman's 10 as Washington led, 27-19.

"I think we came out flat and let them get their confidence," said Chapman. "They're talented, but I don't think they're playing up to the way they should be, at least on paper. You can't let them come out and get their confidence like we did."

Howard's dunk 2:03 into the second quarter gave Washington its largest lead of the half at 36-23. Strickland tallied 10 points in the period to lead the Wizards to a 56-46 halftime margin. Chapman had 19 at the break for the Suns.

Phoenix point guard Jason Kidd went down at the 7:17 mark of the second quarter with a sprained right ankle and did not return. He had left last Sunday's game against Seattle with a sore right ankle.

"I don't want to come back and rush it because we still have a long part of the season to go," said Kidd, who finished with three points and five assists in 13 minutes. "It's frustrating because it was a big game for us and to not be able to play the second half, it really hurt me to see my teammates out there playing hard and they really had a good chance to win the ballgame."

"It's obviously a big blow to us, especially when the other team's best player, Rod Strickland, was having a great day," said Suns coach Danny Ainge. "We needed Jason in there defensively. I thought George (McCloud) did a good job on him, but Strickland killed us today. Absolutely killed us."

The gap was 64-53 with 8:44 to go in the third period before Antonio McDyess scored five points in a 13-2 run. Phoenix evened the score at 66-66 on Cedric Ceballos' three-point play with 5:42 left.

Chapman had 31 through three quarters, but the Suns trailed, 80-78. George McCloud's three-pointer with 9:37 to play forced the last tie of the game, 85-85, until the Wizards took command with a 14-4 spurt.

Webber's three-pointer 47 seconds later began the burst and Howard scored the final eight to make it 99-89 with 4:51 remaining.

"I'm not going to take anything from our guys because Kidd was out," said Bickerstaff. "They just throw so many different things at you (because) they can all shoot that perimeter shot. I thought late in the game we did a nice job stepping up on screens and when we switched, we stayed with the shooters."

Tracy Murray netted 15 points off the bench and Cheaney had 13 for Washington, which made 5-of-11 from three-point range. Howard grabbed 10 boards as the Wizards won the rebounding battle, 44-36.

McDyess tallied 16 points and Cliff Robinson had 13 and seven rebounds for Phoenix, which had a three-game road winning streak halted.
