GAME RECAP

Rex Chapman scored 18 points and Antonio McDyess converted a three-point play with 2:11 remaining as the Phoenix Suns hung on for an 81-80 victory over the Indiana Pacers.

The Pacers, who had their 10-game home winning streak snapped, had a chance to win the game in the closing seconds. Jalen Rose inbounded the ball to Travis Best, who drove down the left side of the lane and let go a running one-hander with one second left, but the ball bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

"The last play was designed for me to come off a screen, square up and fire," said Best. "I couldn't square up, but I still took the shot and I don't think it was a bad shot. We will have nights like this, but we stayed in the game and made a run at them."

McDyess finished with 16 points and seven rebounds and Clifford Robinson added 15 and eight for the Suns. But Phoenix struggled from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, missing 8-of-14 attempts.

"This was a good win for us and they're one of the best teams in the East. Our breakdowns were limited, except for our free throw shooting, which was atrocious," said Phoenix coach Danny Ainge. "Mentally and execution-wise, this was our best game of the year. Except for the last two minutes of each half, we played a flawless game."

As for facing his former Boston teammate, Larry Bird, Ainge said, "Not one time did I think who I was coaching against, but thank goodness Larry wasn't in the game."

For the game Phoenix shot just 52 percent (15-of-29) from the line, with Robinson misfiring on 10 of 13 attempts. Indiana connected on 82 percent (31-of-38) of its free throw attempts. The Suns did outshoot the Pacers from the field, 43 percent (32-for-75) to 34 percent (24-for-71).

Reggie Miller led Indiana with 15 points but shot just 3-of-12 from the field. Rik Smits and Antonio Davis added 10 rebounds apiece as the Pacers outrebounded the Suns 48-37.

"We got the ball in Travis' hands coming off the pick. If he didn't get a good look he was supposed to kick it back out. But he got a good shot," said Bird. "We played very hard in the last quarter, and if we'd done that the first three quarters, we would've won this game.

It marked the 10th consecutive season that the two teams split the season series. Indiana defeated the Suns 99-97 in overtime in Phoenix on December 7th on Miller's 18-footer at the buzzer.

"Tonight I was able to play solid defense on Miller and Best. This was a night where I had to distribute the ball," said Jason Kidd, who shot 0-for-5 from the field but had eight assists and five rebounds in 40 minutes. "We have a lot of talented guys on this team and it was a game we had to win."

The Suns led the entire second half, stretching their lead to 58-47, with 6:21 remaining in the third quarter following a pair of free throws by Chapman. Those free throws capped off an 11-2 Phoenix spurt, with Chapman accounting for six of those points.

Indiana reduced that deficit to a single point with 2:30 remaining when Miller hit two free throws to draw the Pacers within 78-77.

On Phoenix's next possession, McDyess grabbed a missed shot by Robinson, put in the follow and hit a free throw to complete a three-point play, giving the Suns an 81-77 lead.

The Suns missed three field goal attempts and two free throws down the stretch, and the Pacers used a pair of free throws by Smits to pull within 81-80 with 29.7 seconds to go.

After Chapman missed a 21-footer with 5.5 seconds remaining, Indiana gained possession, setting up the miss by Best at the buzzer.

"Our intensity was about as good as it's been all year," said Chapman. "We had a lot of guys step up for us. We took a bad loss at home to these guys, with Reggie waving at the crowd after the game. We don't forget things like that."
