GAME RECAP

Mitch Richmond scored 15 of his 19 points in the decisive third quarter and rookie Michael Stewart set a team record by recording six of his nine blocks in the same period to lead the Sacramento Kings to a 105-89 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Corliss Williamson scored 24 points and Stewart -- who had eight of his blocks in the second half -- added 14 rebounds for the Kings, who set a franchise and Arco Arena record with 17 blocks in their fourth straight home victory.

"I've got three things that were very important tonight," said Kings coach Eddie Jordan. "Yogi (Stewart), Yogi and Yogi. He was the difference, especially in the second half. He keyed the defense and he got us going."

"I was working hard and challenging shots, that's what I do," said Stewart, who left to a standing ovation with 9:14 to go in the game. "That's a Clipper team that has dominated us. It was good to come out in the second half and put some things together."

Trailing 51-50 at the break, Sacramento opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run. After the Clippers' Rodney Rogers pulled Los Angeles within 54-53, Richmond hit an 18-footer and Williamson followed a dunk with a layup, capping the burst and giving the Kings a 60-53 edge with 9:32 to go.

"We thought we were moving the ball well in the first half, we just weren't making aggressive moves to the basket," Richmond explained. "In the second half, we wanted to go in and take it to the basket a little more. That's what we did."

Sacramento's Billy Owens left in the second quarter with a rib injury and will be X-rayed Wednesday morning. Mark Hendrickson stepped in and finished with 10 points and eight assists for the Kings, who won their third straight game.

Rogers netted 18 points, but was shut out in the fourth quarter, and Lamond Murray had 17 for the Clippers, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Los Angeles lost for the seventh time in its last eight road games.

"He (Stewart) wasn't the main factor, but it was a plus for them that he blocked those shots," Rogers said. "The main factor was we weren't shooting well and they were."

The Kings hit 45 percent (41-of-92) from the field while holding Los Angeles to 34 percent (32-of-93). The teams were even on the boards at 55 apiece, but the Clippers sank just 9-of-20 free throws and committed 21 turnovers which Sacramento turned into 25 points.

Murray scored 13 points and Brent Barry added all 12 of his points in the closely contested first half, which featured 12 lead changes and nine ties.

Sacramento took a 26-21 lead after the first quarter before the Clippers came out strong in the second period, charging out to a 31-28 advantage with a 10-2 burst.

After Williamson's lay-in gave the Kings a seven-point lead in the third quarter, the Clippers fought back, pulling within 64-61 on a dunk by rookie Maurice Taylor with 6:51 to go.

But Sacramento answered with an 11-0 surge which Williamson capped with a seven-footer with 2:16 remaining, giving the Kings a 75-61 edge. Richmond, who hit just 6-of-14 from the floor but sank all seven attempts from the line, had six points in the run. Stewart had three blocks in the spurt, including a emphatic rejection of a shot by Darrick Martin.

"Defensively, once you block one, two or three, especially when you get on a roll in a short amount of time, it seems like you have a lot of opportunities," said Stewart, who tied Duane Causewell's team record for most blocks in a game.

"I thought he (Stewart) did a great job," said Clippers coach Bill Fitch. "He took advantage of his opportunities real well. He's got great legs and I like the way he competes. He plays with a lot of enthusiasm, and he was a one man blocking machine out there tonight."
