GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Eddie Jones added 22 points as the Los Angeles Lakers overcame a poor first three quarters and remained perfect all-time against the Vancouver Grizzlies, 100-87.

O'Neal, who was playing in just his third game since returning from a broken wrist, has 51 points in the last two contests for the Lakers, who rebounded from a shocking 113-107 home loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday night.

The victory was the 10th straight for the Lakers over Vancouver, which dropped its seventh straight game and has won just once in 11 contests.

"I don't think we can ever feel good about not destroying a team from the beginning," said Jones. "It's been proven, if you let teams hang around, they can beat you."

Bryant Reeves scored 24 points for Vancouver, which has dropped back-to-back games to the Western Conference's two best teams. The Grizzlies fell to the Seattle Supersonics, 120-108, on Sunday.

Los Angeles pounded the Grizzlies, 121-95, on November 16th, the largest margin of victory in the three-year series.

After trailing 47-38 at halftime, the Lakers ran off 19 of the first 22 points of the third quarter to take a 57-50 lead. O'Neal and Rick Fox each had six points during the spurt, capped by layup by Jones with 7:41 to play in the quarter.

The Grizzlies immediately responded with a 11-2 run over the next four minutes, with Reeves scoring eight of his 24 points during that span. After one free throw and a jumper by Reeves sandwiched a 12-footer by O'Neal, Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit one from the line to bring Vancouver within 59-54.

Reeves followed with a dunk at the 4:40 mark, hit a foul shot 24 seconds later, and Pete Chilcutt tied the game with a layup. A layup by Reeves with 3:02 to play in the quarter capped the run and put the Grizzlies ahead 61-59.

But the Lakers answered with an 11-2 burst of their own, led by Kobe Bryant, who tallied 16 points overall. A layup by Jones with 10:54 remaining put Los Angeles on top, 70-63, and Vancouver would come no closer than five the rest of the way.

"In the first half we didn't come out and play Lakers basketball, and that's something that's been happening lately," said Bryant. "In the second half we stepped up to the plate."

Fox also had 16 points and Robert Horry contributed six and 12 rebounds for the Lakers, who were outrebounded by Vancouver, 51-48.

Los Angeles shot just 43 percent (35-of-82) from the field, including 6-of-18 three-pointers, and took advantage of 22 Grizzlies turnovers they turned into 25 points.

"I thought we had another good opportunity tonight," said Grizzlies coach Brian Hill. "Los Angeles did not play really well in the first half and we had a nine-point lead. But they became much more aggresive in the second half offensively and broke us down."

The Grizzlies shot 41 percent (36-of-88) and were pounded in the paint, 46-32. Reeves and Chilcutt had 11 rebounds apiece while Lee Mayberry dished out 11 assists.
