GAME RECAP

Aaron Williams scored a career-high 20 points off the bench as the Seattle SuperSonics dominated the third quarter en route to their 12th win in the last 13 games, 102-81 over the Charlotte Hornets.

Gary Payton contributed 18 points and eight assists for Seattle (27-6), which owns the league's best record and notched its second six-game winning streak in the past month. Williams connected on 8-of-9 shots and grabbed eight rebounds as the SuperSonics improved their home record to a Western Conference-best 14-2.

"My job is to really play defense and get some rebounds," Williams said. "Fortunately tonight, I got a couple of lobs and things went my way."

Hersey Hawkins scored seven of his nine points in the third period, when Seattle outscored the Hornets, 28-13. The Sonics reeled off a 13-0 run, which was keyed by Hawkins' three-pointer before Payton's free throw capped it for a 72-58 lead with 2:22 left. The Hornets, who hit just 6-of-21 shots in the third, trailed 79-62 heading into the fourth and got no closer than 15 in the final period.

"In the third quarter, we just came out and dominated and basically cruised from then on," Sonics forward Detlef Schrempf said. "We've had some problems early in the season coming out slow in the third. So the last few games, we've done a really good job and hopefully that will continue."

Vlade Divac scored a season-high 25 points on 11-of-13 shooting for Charlotte, which has opened its five-game road trip with two straight losses. The Hornets have won just once in their last six games away from home.

"It was two different halves," Divac said. "In the first half, we played very well, especially on defense. In the third quarter, they had too many layups, easy baskets, and our defense collapsed."

"Vlade had a fantastic game and we had something going with him, getting the ball in the blocks and then kicking it out, and it worked pretty good," Hornets coach Dave Cowens said. "But they beat us soundly in the second half."

Divac, who also pulled down nine boards, had made just 10-of-36 (28 percent) shots over his last four games.

Glen Rice scored 19 points and the Hornets fell to 3-9 when he is held to less than 20.

"They got a lot of second chance points, but where we really hurt ourselves was on defense," Rice said. "We were letting guys get two feet into the paint."

Seattle had 23 second-chance points to Charlotte's eight and also outscored the Hornets in the paint, 56-32.

With the game tied at 53-53 early in the third quarter, Seattle finished the period on a 26-9 run. Jim McIlvaine's tip-in with 9:16 remaining gave Seattle the lead for good, but the Hornets were within 59-58 shortly after that until the Sonics reeled off 13 straight points.

"In the first half we were pretty good, then all of a sudden in the third quarter, we were not as patient," Cowens said.

Vin Baker opened the run with a free throw, but finished with just nine points, well below his team-leading 20.0 points per game average.

Schrempf and Dale Ellis chipped in 12 points apiece for the Sonics, who shot 50 percent (37-of-74) from the field and made 22-of-25 free throws.

Ellis hit both of his three-point attempts and has made 23-of-27 shots from behind the arc in his last eight games. He leads the league in three-point percentage at 49.6 percent (59-of-119).

Anthony Mason had 11 rebounds and seven assists, but scored just five points on 2-of-9 shooting for Charlotte, which made 43 percent (33-of-76) from the floor. The Hornets attempted just 11 free throws, hitting nine, and committed 18 turnovers.

Seattle had lost both games last season to Charlotte, which along with the defending champion Chicago Bulls were the only teams that the Sonics did not beat during the 1996-97 campaign.
